Good idea. They really were an awesome unit as you said. :l

I think Merlin had the same piece value -- as in chessmen -- that the Deacon had but was simply more low key, obviously. The Mule was a force to be reckoned with, a constant, a brute (in the "nice" sense of the word). A defensive coach's dream and opponents coaches' nightmare. Ramblin' Ram mentioned Merlin's achievement of making 14 Pro Bowls his first 14 seasons. Amazing.

But, again, he was a bit more reserved publicly than the Deacon. I liked M.O.'s work as an NFL Sportscaster too. Can you imagine Deacon Jones* working as a game analyst / commentator on TV?

*.- The Deacon and Muhammad Ali must have been twins separated at birth.

This is one of my favorite pics of a Merlin Attack:

Re: ROTD: The 60s

The fearsome foursome was as a unit the Minister of defense and David Jones was definitely the main "DEACON".:r

The Deacon.

Av, you need to give us harder choices.

Well, there were a handful of votes for the other names that AV nominated here for 'ROTD - 60s' (I voted for Gabriel), but I certainly do not have a problem with Deacon being the clear winner.

A monster of a Deacon BTW. I'm just amazed that his jersey has not been retired. :bash:
