    Re: Round 2: Brian Leonard

I still say we needed a backup running back badly, 2nd biggest need IMO, and there was no better all around NFL ready RB in the draft this year. The boy can run for the tough yards, catch the ball, pick up the blitz, and is a hell of a pride swallowing team player. And if you are concerned about his speed, I took the 40 yard dash times from the combine and measured the 20 to 40 yard split to get an idea of the players top speed, and here are some comparisons...

    Name - 1st and 2nd 20/40 split times

    Lorenzo Booker - 1.89-1.91
    Kenny Irons -1.90-1.92
    Brian Leonard -1.90-1.91
    Yamon Figurs -1.80-1.81

    Yamon Figurs is really fast!

Maybe this isn't the best way to determine a players top speed, but it is a gauge. Anyway, I think leonard is fast enough to be an effective NFL RB, and I'm happy we got him. I think and hope he will be an effective and dependable backup and weapon in his own right.

    Re: Round 2: Brian Leonard

I went with the solid player selection. We don't really know how Brian Leonard will do at the NFL level. It's a big step going from the college ranks to the professional level. I'm hoping he is a solid player at the very least.
I do feel like we needed a "solid" back-up for SJ so picking BL in the second round didn't phase me all that much.

    My take....ACCEPTABLE.

im hoping not only will he be a back-up to SJ but will also be worked in to be on the field at the same time and hopefully in a year or two will be our starting FB!
if his lead blocking skills can be coached to a higher level!

    i voted solid pick!

I think he will contribute alot to the team, from the highlights I've seen of him, he seems quite fast and athletic for a FB.

    Comments from senior bowl practices.

Rutgers fullback Brian Leonard continues to stand out as a receiver as well, looking very smooth and natural in that aspect of the game and making me wonder if he can't be an H-Back in the mold of Chris Cooley or Garrett Mills. He's going to be a unique weapon for someone.

Linehan likes the H-back...and he got his man.

"Best player available for the Rams, fills a need, Great pick"
-He wasn't the BPA on my board, so I didn't go with this option.

"Solid player, will contribute, itís a fair pick."
-This one is the most appropriate answer. Leonard is a solid prospect who will contribute as a situational player. Value was good, so it's a fair pick.

"Great player, we have other needs, bad pick"
-While I agree with the notion that we had other larger needs to address, I don't think that alone makes Leonard a bad pick. Passed on this option.

"Overrated player wonít play much, bad pick."
-I don't think he's overrated as I had him going in mid to late round two, and I think we'll find was to use him. Can't choose this one.

"We could have found a back up RB/FB in the later rounds, bad pick."
-I agree that we could have found a back-up in a later round, but again, I don't think that's enough to push this into the bad pick category.
So I went with option two.

That's pretty much the way I see it too, Nick. Although, after seeing his highlights and the following that he has, I'm beginning to think that he has the potential to be something special.

In the back of my mind, I keep wondering how Haslett felt about this pick. Did he agree with the strategy or was he livid, knowing Crowder and company were still available to help him fix the defense.

I think Jackson should block for him.

    Let the controversy begin.

I like the way you think!

I heard Brian say that his official position for the Rams is Offensive Halfback. It sounds like Linehan is planning on using Brian's skills to their fullest extent. Man, I can't wait for you guys to see this kid play week after week.

It's not like he's an automatic superstar like Reggie Bush, but the more you watch him, it's impossible not to notice how much he helps the team with intangibles and parts of the game that do not show up in the stat sheet. Don't get me wrong, the guy can fill it up. But even when he doesn't score touchdowns, or make the key block, he'll still help the team in some way, like running out his pass route convincingly to draw the linebacker away from the middle of the field.

He's going to make spectacular plays; but the real BL is a complete player who plays like a guy who loves football.

Well Jackson isn't the best RB in the league and not the best in the NFC West!
If this kid comes in and tears it up , Great! At first I thought.... A RB......... what the hell.
but I like the pick now.

Well you got me on the WEST and I don't have any stats to prove myself right. I do believe Gore will have more yards next year.I actually hope not but Gore is pretty damn good. jACKSON EXCELLS AT TIMES but he still misses alot of holes. He did get better at that by years end so we will see. Hell I hope he breaks ED's yards in a season!

    Nick,

Just curious, who were the top 3 BPA's on your board in rounds 2 and 3?

I had Kalil, Leonard, and Abiamiri, in that order, in round 2.

And I had Bradley, Wade, and McDonald, in round 3.

I'll give you the top five in each spot.
    • Round Two: Ryan Kalil, Tim Crowder, Victor Abiamiri, Eric Wright, Charles Johnson
    • Round Three: Trent Edwards, Jonathan Wade, Ray McDonald, Daymeion Hughes, Stewart Bradley

Guess I was off on Johnson in the second. I actually thought we might give Trent Edwards a look in the third, as well.
