Round Two: Bradford Teams Up With SJ39

Round Two: Bradford teams up with SJ39

    Thursday, August 26, 2010

QUESTION: Sam Bradford gets his first start for the Rams tonight. While his numbers have been unimpressive in the first two preseason games, how much of an impact do you think it will have on Bradfordís performance tonight to having Steven Jackson in the same backfield with him?

Well, weíre about to find out. Jackson may only play a series or two against New England, but thereís no doubt he levels the playing field for the Rams, and the entire offense perks up when heís in the huddle.

The other Rams running backs are terrible, so that should help a lot. The Rams passing game is designed for third-and-3 situations, not third-and-11. But . . . regardless of the down-and-distance issues this team will face against a good team, the Rams need to stretch the field with Bradford at QB. If they canít do that, what is the point of playing him at all? Bradford is not going to learn a whole lot in a dink-and-dunk passing game.

A major impact. Jackson keeps defenses honest; none of the other current Rams running backs have been able to do that. That makes the offense one-dimensional and puts more pressure on the quarterback.

It should impact Bradford greatly. The threat of Jackson in the backfield will help keep Bradford out of too many second-and-12 situations. As a quarterback, second-and-long and third-and-long are difficult enough, but being a rookie in those situations compounds things even more.

    TOM ACKERMAN (KMOX Sports Director)

Defenses always pay attention when Jackson is in the backfield. But to truly keep the opposition honest, Iíd like to see the Rams open up the vertical passing game. Against the Browns, the dink-and-dunk offense was getting a little monotonous. Bradford has a strong arm. Letís see it. And it should open up space for Jackson to gobble up yardage. Of course, the offensive line needs to cooperate by keeping the heat away from Bradford.

SJAX has become an exceptional blocker. The Rams with a weak O-Line, Opponents defenses have been Teeing off on our QBs, especially when Bradfords in the game. It was a different story when Steven Jackson started last week. It was a joy to watch SJAX takeout opposing D Linemen trying to lay the wood to his QB.
Bradford & SJAX ~ This could be the start of a beautiful friendship!
