Ryan's Audition Important To Rams' Future - Immediate and Long-term
Jamie Martin.
Not a name that gets your blood pumping, is it?
To be honest, even those inclined to compliment Martin find it hard to utilize words stronger than "competent," "adequate," or "okay for now."
Now, along comes Ryan.
Ryan Fitzpatrick.
Young, athletic, stong-armed, intriguing, poised, exciting...
These are the words people are using to describe Ryan and his dramatic inaugural perfomance.
Circumstance now dictates that Ryan get more playing time. Starter Marc Bulger may be (and, barring an improbable playoff run, should be) done for the season. Martin just got his bell rung. Ryan's going to get his shot.
In the short run, maybe he can be a proverbial "spark." As long as he plays with a "nothing to lose" attitude, he could continue to make big plays.
Even if he can't rally the team into the playoff chase (and, with a depleted O line and continuing defensive issues, its not too likely he will), this is an important period for Ryan and the Rams.
If Ryan can show he can play with consistency, the Rams will (a) no longer need journeyman Martin to fill the backup role, and (b) will have no need to search for a "QB of the future" in the draft.
If nothing else, Ryan can at least get the blood of Ram fans pumping once again.
Welcome to the St. Louis Rams!

He was money when he had to be. Looks like he may have "it". We'll see how he comes back after a week of thinking about being "the guy". I'm pretty excited about the possibilities.

Re: Ryan's Audition Important To Rams' Future - Immediate and Long-term
fitz did an amazing job today playing on their turf with what seemed like an insurmountable deficit late in the second half...the poise he showed was great especially considering he's just a rookie...yeah, the texans have a worse defense then ours but fitz didn't just manage this game, he won it with his throwing...
washington has a top 10 defense, although they only have one interception this entire season. we host them at the dome...can't wait to see if fitz can amaze again...!

I just wonder what might have been if Fitz had been the one sent in when Bulger got hurt in the Indy game....
Fitzpatrick isn't as accurate as Bulger, but still managed to drop the ball close to where it had to be. He's more mobile than Bulger OR Martin. His timing is slightly off, but showed a lot of improvement during the game. It didn't take him long to settle in.
Looks to me like Martin better think of retirement, I believe the Rams have found a SOLID backup QB.
With Bulger as #1, Fitz as #2...our draft picks won't be spent on a QB this year. To me, this means we might be able to get a good shutdown CB or LB, because we can have another pick to choose one....Super Bowl Champions 2013!

Found that ironic, did you?
(of course, the whole "AvengerRam doesn't like Kurt Warner" thing is a myth, but i digress..)

Re: Ryan's Audition Important To Rams' Future - Immediate and Long-term
I too am excited about the idea of Fitzpatrick as our #1 this year and #2 next year, but I do hope that everyone who is currently lining up to bear his children will not go to the other extreme should he have a more modest day against one (or more) of the better defenses we will be facing in the near future, including this upcoming week.

No question - the jury's still out. He could stink up the joint in the coming weeks and the Rams could be looking for a young QB in April.
I hope not.
