Report: Rams Ready To Part Ways With Spagnuolo, McDaniels After The Season

St. Louis Rams head coach Steve Spagnuolo is likely out after this season, according to another report today.


At 2-11 with each loss blurring together with the last one, the odds do not favor Steve Spagnuolo keeping his job as head coach of the St. Louis Rams. A report from the San Diego Union Tribune in November noted that team owner Stan Kroenke was already planning make changes at head coach and general manager. Today, Jason LaCanfora of the NFL Network noted something similar, saying on the air that sources told him the Rams plan to "blow things up" after the season ends.

Whether you blame the injuries, the personnel decisions, or the weather, it's pretty tough to stand by what the Rams have done this season.

There's no shortage of head scratching decisions with this team. Bernie Miklasz noted this morning the coaching staff's stubborn refusal to adapt the game for Sam Bradford similar to what they did with Kellen Clemens and A.J. Feeley. Not hiring a quarterbacks coach looked like a poor decision at the time because of the lockout and a new system. The defense is playing better, after 12 games, but it's notable that last year's group of outside linebackers made for a better unit than this year's group.

Other teams have handled similar injury situations, the Seattle Seahawks for instance, with aplomb. Add in the anecdotal stuff you hear about the coaching staff - e.g. Mike Karney's interview in which he noted Spags barely talks to the players during halftime, telling considering how poorly the team plays after the half - and it's pretty tough sell to keep the coach.

Finally, whether Spagnuolo's a good guy or not, it would be pretty tough to try and sell season tickets, much less get a new stadium, by bringing the same bunch back to lead the team in 2012.

Opinions aside, this is the second high profile report claiming that the Rams will make coaching changes ahead of the 2012 season.

LaCanfora's news does conflict with a report from Adam Schefter over the weekend that the Rams would like to keep McDaniels. With the changes coming in Kansas City, there's plenty of talk that McDaniels could be brought in as the offensive coordinator, where he'd be working for Scott Pioli and with Kyle Orton and Matt Cassel.

As for Spagnuolo, he could probably have his pick of defensive coordinator jobs. Many still believe he could go back to Philly, where Andy Reid once saw him as the eventual successor to Jim Johnson.

For the Rams, it's yet another coaching change, and it's more important than ever that they get it right this time.

So? What is your point? There are no "results" at this point, only speculation.

Whether it's a report, or pure speculation based on current events surrounding the team, is irrelevant. The bottom line is, more than a few changes will be made. Head coach, likely high on that list.

It was interesting to me that the "report" or whatever stated that the Rams would like to keep McDaniels. I think that he may actually be the problem. Or at least part of it. Everyone was pretty happy with the coaching last year. The team looked to be on the upswing. But here we are this year in the toilet once again. So what changed from last year? The two most obvious were the strike shortened training camps and a new offensive coordinator. Where are our biggest problems? On offense. I doubt that Spags forgot how to coach in the offseason. I wouldn't be surprised if Kroenke wanted to keep Spags. He won't of course. Too bad.

If only journalism dealt with pure fact, if it did our periodicals would be a lot thinner and there would be little room for the talking heads at CNN, SKY, FOX the BBC and wherever else concerning the current global financial situation, the situations in Egypt, Libya and Syria and whether Britney Spears actually is getting married once more.

Thsi year, massive injuries to our CB's and offensive ineptitude doom the season and it suddenly means that Spags is the whole problem.

The defense is still good, and the team doesn't quit. Sounds like Spags isn't doing the worst of jobs...

I don't believe he is the whole problem, the issue is he isn't any part of the solution either it seems.

I don't think I've seen one post this whole season saying Spags is the "whole problem." And, his job title is not defensive coordinator.

Bottom line, I'm tired of the darn excuses! We all know he's a good guy. We all know he's tried hard. We all know the players haven't quit on him. We all know about this team's infinite amount of near death injuries, insurmountable schedule against players twice our size, and the impossible training camp from hell.

If anything, this season's awful circumstances presented coach Spags a great opportunity to step forward and prove himself a standout HEAD coach by showing extraordinary LEADERSHIP... who honestly thinks he's done that?

Seattle has a similar injury situation to the Rams at both the corner back and offensive line positions. They have a below average QB. They have improved each week. They have beaten the Rams twice. And yet they're 7-7 and playing well. The Giants have more guys on injured reserve than the Rams do yet are locked in a fight for the division. Spare me yet another soliloquy about injuries. Yes, they're very real and have affected the Rams. But this is also about coaching, gentlemen. Spags has whiffed on talent evaluation and McDaniels has laid a big egg instead of temporarily tailoring an offense to help Bradford overcome the deficiencies this team has offensively.

@njramsfan I agree, depth is everything. Pro football is a brutal sport and guaranteed guys will get injured every year. For seahawks fans the ruskell years were a nightmare in large part because he wanted to load the starting lineup with high priced stars at key positions. The economics of it meant the backups were scrubs. A roster of stars and scrubs does not lead to winning football.

A roster loaded from top to bottom with interesting prospects and a couple of journeymen seems to be the way to reload. If guys take off they take off, if they don't you let them go. As the roster matures you pay to keep the cream of your program intact, not to patch holes.

Sure, "journalism" has taken a seemingly continuous dive in quality since the world of blogs began invading cyberspace. That does not mean there aren't some highly veritable stories or ... okay ... rumors out there within the borders of blogland.

Ryan Van Bibber may be Justin Bieber's cousin for all I care. But I am interested to a small degree to see what is circulating in the so called reports, or news, or information that are related to the STL Rams, that is, those included here in ClanRam. Such as what is "said" about Coach Spags.

The point being, of course, believe the maxim: do not believe everything you read. :D
