It’s over for Rams and CB Wade

It’s over for Rams and CB Wade
    By Jim Thomas
    St. Louis Post-Dispatch

League sources told the Post-Dispatch on Tuesday that the St. Louis Rams will not make a tender offer to restricted free agent Jonathan Wade. Furthermore, they will not try to re-sign him for a lesser amount once Wade hits the market as an unrestricted free agent Friday.

Last Sept. 1, the Rams thought enough of Wade to trade starting cornerback Tye Hill to Atlanta. That made Wade the team’s starting right corner for the first four games of 2009.

But Wade gradually worked his way into the doghouse, for reasons that were never entirely clear. He went from starter, to nickel back, to basically benched, even though the Rams were far from stellar at cornerback last season. Wade’s status sunk so low that he was on the pre-game inactive list in Game 14 against Houston.

A third-round draft pick out of Tennessee in 2007, Wade played in 47 games with six starts over three seasons as a Ram.

Devaney was eulogising about Bradley Fletcher last week, so this doesn't come as much of a surprise. It's a shame that Wade could never develop the coverage skills to go with his athletic ability, but that's football.

The St Louis Linehans are slowly becoming the St Louis Spags! This has to be a good thing.

Wow, another track star drafted to play corner doesn't pan out. What a surprise. Pressure is on, Mr. King.

Counted amongst the Rams many failures last year is perhaps one of the most embarrassing stats in the history of the NFL: The Rams cornerbacks combined for a grand total of ZERO, yes ZERO interceptions. In a 16 game schedule, you'd think maybe a guy would pick ONE off by accident. Just beyond pathetic.

Good riddance to Wade and anyone else who plays the position who has stunk up the joint. It's too bad we can't draft two corners in successive rounds.

Wade was a guy who increased his draft position by running a good 40 time. Which shows that 40 times dont mean anything

Let's clean house on all those linehan picks. Sad to see that Wade couldn't develop into a good CB given all that athleticism. Hopefully Fletcher will step up and help us out in the secondary. Are there any decent DBs who could drop to us in the 2nd? I hate to say it, but I feel like bartell is dropping off as well. Maybe he was just having a bad year like the rest of the squad?

Re: It’s over for Rams and CB Wade

I honestly didn't see him as such a bad player. When Tye Hill was traded, Wade was our starting CB! Fletcher then beat him out but when Fletcher went down, street free agents jumped ahead of Wade.

Wade wasn't a premier CB but his play on the field wasn't as bad as you guys are dumping on him. My guess is there was something off the field that caused his downfall. He was better than Cord Parks. At the end of the year, Craig Dahl was playing more CB than Wade.
