Sack Tandems (Av's Stat of the Week)

    Here's an interesting stat...

    NFL's Top Sack Tandems

    1. Kansas City Chiefs: 20 (Justin Houston 11.0/Tamba Hali 9.0)
    2. St. Louis Rams: 18.5 (Robert Quinn 12.0/Chris Long 6.5)
    3. Indianapolis Colts: 17 (Robert Mathis 13.5/Jerrell Freeman 3.5)
Buffalo Bills: 17 (Mario Williams 11.0/Jerry Hughes 6.0)
Baltimore Ravens: 17 (Terrell Suggs 9.0/Elvis Dumervil 8.0)
    6. Carolina Panthers: 14.5 (Charles Johnson 8.5/Greg Hardy 6.0)
    7. New England Patriots: 13.5 (Chandler Jones 8.5/Chris Jones 5.0)
    8. New York Jets: 13.0 (Muhammed Wilkerson 8.0/Calvin Pace 5.0)
Dallas Cowboys: 13.0 (Jason Hatcher 7.0/George Selvie 6.0)
    10. Seattle Seahawks: 12.0 (Michael Bennett 6.5/Cliff Avril 5.5)

The majority of the teams on the list run a base 3-4 or a mix of 3 and 4 man fronts. The only two on the list that are pure 4-3 defenses are the Rams and the Panthers.

If there's one aspect of the Rams that is close to "dominant," its the DL's ability to rush the passer. In addition to Quinn and Long, the Rams have three players with 3 or more sacks (Michael Brockers 3.5, Williams Hayes 3.0, Kendall Langford 3.0) and all 3 are linemen. In all 29 of the Rams' 32 sacks have been produced by the front 4.

Even better news - while there has been some sentiment that Langford might be a guy on the hot seat given his cap number relative to his overall performance (which has been very good lately), if the Rams wish to to so, they can return their entire DL corps next year.

No question the pass rush on the D line has hit its stride, the question is, where was it early in the year, especially against Atlanta (who has collapsed from an offensive line perspective). This area is, and was expected to be a strength of our team, but they really didnt show up in the second half of the arizona game, the entire atlanta game or the dallas game, and were suspect in the san francisco game as well.

Adrian Peterson has games in which he rushes for less than 80 yards.

Calvin Johnson has games in which he does not catch a TD pass.

    Great QBs have off days.

Really good O lines give up sacks sometimes.

I'm not sure why we need to pick out individual games (or halves of games) and ask the question: where was the pass rush? Fact is, over the last 26 regular season games, the Rams have been among the league leaders in total sacks, and have accomplished this primarily with their front 4, rather than elaborate and risky blitz packages.

Quinn could pick any player on our defense and still show up on this list. He's been lights out rushing the passer, and I've noticed considerable improvement in his run defense too.

Agreed. According to ESPN's stats, Quinn had a total of 3 "stuffs" in his first two years. This year, he has 7 in ten games.

He also has 5 forced fumbles, which is first in the NFL.

Yes, this aspect of the D has been enjoyable to witness. I think Long was nicked up early in the year but he seems to be healthy now.

With Ogletree and Armstrong getting some pt the linebacking Corp should be able to generate some pressure as well. The defense looks bright again.

The other thing about Justin Houston is he has 7.5 of those sacks in only 2 games. So he has a few games where he got none. Quinn is more consistent, and I suspect Quinn & Long will be leading that category very shortly.

Good point. Chris Long continues to be the glue that keeps this group functioning well together, imo. It's like playing Where's Waldo when you look at sack highlights from this group; a lot of the time you'll see Long corralling a QB or RB into the arms of his teammates.

Quinn is 23! 23! Is it premature to say that Quinn is the top DE this year? 12 sacks 5 FF. Just crazy.

Quinn is an animal. I can't think of any other player on the roster who has the weekly impact he has.

We've seen how dominant Brockers can be and he's only a 2nd year player. Sky's the limit for him and Quinn.

Like you said Langfords kind of came out of nowhere and started earning his pay.

Long seems to be hitting his stride lately, but he can still play better than he has. Particularly by holding his own defending the running game.
