Sad, 'lousy' or ridiculous? Rams are just plain terrible

    By Jeff Gordon
    ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
    09/14/2008

The Rams picked a funny way to honor late owner Georgia Frontiere on this special day for her family.

Actually, it wasn’t funny at all. It was just sad. Or, as beleaguered head coach Scott Linehan bellowed at one point during his post-game tirade, “it’s lousy.”

The Rams spoiled the scheduled three-hour tribute by succumbing to the World Champion Giants 41-13. For those fans still keeping track, this was the Rams’ 15th loss in their last 18 games.

It was an old-school thrashing. The Giants muscled up on both sides of the ball. Their defense roughed up Rams quarterback Marc Bulger with relentless pressure.

On offense, New York pounded away with its impressive stable of running backs to set up the inevitable money passes to Plaxico Burress.

Yes, the Rams seemed “into” this game. Yes, they put up a reasonable fight on their home field . . . for 3 1/2 quarters, anyway.

Torry Holt made a highlight-reel catch on his 45-yard TD reception from Bulger. Steven Jackson ran hard and proved valuable as a receiver. Top draft pick Chris Long actually got a sack.

But overall, their offense lacked imagination -- in part because of safety concerns for Bulger.

Then it went really bad at the end. Giants defensive end Justin Tuck leaped up to block, then intercept a Bulger pass. He managed to rumble into the end zone, making a tough loss that much tougher.

And when Ahmad Bradshaw tacked on still another Giants touchdown to push the margin to 28 points, the tough loss became ridiculous.

Afterward, Linehan was furious. Seriously, the mild-mannered mentor actually went off on his team, his coaching and himself.

“We have not had one red zone offensive play,” he barked. “If you don’t get the ball down there, if you don’t convert third down and get down there you can’t expect to score touchdowns.”

    True enough.

“Defensively, we are going to have to stop them,” Linehan yelled. “These aren’t the only two good offenses that we are going to have to play. We are going to play a lot more. We are going to have to stop people. We are going to have to score on offense and stop people on defense and we are not doing it.”

And, oh yeah, the coaching isn’t good enough either.

“It starts with me, and then our coaches and players, period,” he said. “That is it, the buck stops here.”

So how do the Rams bounce back from this?

Yes, they have suffered only two losses and there are 14 games to play. In today’s NFL, 0-2 starts are no big deal. The NFC West appears especially weak this year.

But the fact the Rams are terrible IS a big deal. Didn’t interim owner Chip Rosenbloom consider this squad a playoff contender after he took charge?

The Rams front office could fire Linehan -– thus appeasing the team’s dwindling fan base -- but who would take over? As my press box cohorts noted, neither offensive coordinator Al Saunders nor defensive coordinator Jim Haslett has been brilliant earlier.

Another problem is the team’s talent base, or the lack thereof. A lot of these guys should be solid NFL players, but they are not.

This is a bad situation, worse than even the biggest skeptics feared coming into the season. Something has to change, but what?

    Tick, tick, tick . . .

Yeah, on paper we look much better than we really are, so the team has just got no belief in anything the coaching staff is doing, which is unacceptable at this level of the game. They are all just a bunch of quitters getting down on themselves.

The Rams are making every team look like a great team. They are terrible and it is hard to watch.

It's a good thing that Manning was not very accurate passing the ball today. The score could have been higher. The secondary can't cover anyone, except for the one nice play that Bartell had near the goal line.

Sounds to me like alot of quitters who are just there for a paycheck. Not all of them have quit, but alot have.Somebody needs to take the reigns and rally the troops, this is looking worse than a Division IV college team, if there is such a thing.

The only things on paper that pay out like they're supposed to on this Rams team are the players' paychecks
