Sam Bradford To Vincent Jackson...Sound Good?

Sam Bradford to Vincent Jackson ... sound good?

    BY ROGER HENSLEY
    Wednesday, September 15, 2010

QUESTION: Mark Clayton proved to be a nice pickup in last week’s action, but the Rams still appear to have no deep threat at WR. Do you think the Rams should be pursuing Vincent Jackson right now?

    JIM THOMAS

Just about every time I mention Leonard Little’s name in print (or cyberspace), I get hate mail. So does Rams Nation really want Jackson (2 DUI arrests) that badly?

    BRYAN BURWELL

It is certainly worth exploring although he would not be available for another five weeks. In the meantime, it might be time to give Brandon Gibson an extended look. Until Danario Alexander is 100 percent healthy, Gibson is the most intriguing WR on the roster, particularly after his strong finish in preseason.

    BILL COATS

The Rams certainly could use Jackson’s talent. But do they really want to deal with the baggage he’d bring (two arrests for DUI, a tiff with the Chargers’ front office this summer?) I don’t think so. The Rams seem to have a pretty nice mix in the locker room. Why take a chance of having that disrupted?

KEVIN WHEELER (Host of “Sports Open Line” on KMOX)

Absolutely, but it’s not as simple as just making a decent offer to the Chargers. GM A.J. Smith is playing reindeer games with Jackson, plus the player is seeking a new deal and we’re still not sure if his suspension will hold at three weeks. There is a hearing about that tomorrow and he could end up being out for 6 weeks depending on the ruling. Throw in the fact that the Vikings are pushing hard for Jackson and you’ve got an uphill battle.

If you don’t have to get into a bidding war with a desperate team that has Super Bowl aspirations then it makes all the sense in the world to pursue an impact receiver like Jackson, but there is nothing simple about any of this. He also has to agree to a contract with the team that trades for him and a Super Bowl contender would certainly be more appealing to him than a rebuilding team.

    JEFF GORDON

Given his holdout, his league suspension and the CBA rules regarding his exempt roster status, Jackson doesn’t offer great near-term value for this season. If the Chargers were going to trade him, the team needed to do so during the preseason when his value was higher. The Rams must upgrade their receiving targets for Sam Bradford in a big way. Can much more be done during this season? That seems unlikely. In the meantime, it would be nice to see what Brandon Gibson can do after his late preseason showing.

Sam Bradford to Steven Jackson sounds better.
