Sando: Age Issue Getting Old For Rams' No. 39

Age issue getting old for Rams' No. 39

    Aug 5

Questions and answers followed a pattern when St. Louis Rams running back Steven Jackson spoke with reporters at training camp Thursday.

Jackson is 28 years old and nearing that point when running backs tend to fade, but as Jackson pointed out, "I still feel fresh and still feel young."

Please do not suggest Jackson, coming off six consecutive 1,000-yard seasons, has suddenly become an old man. Do not suggest Jackson needs newly signed running backs Cadillac Williams and Jerious Norwood to carry some of the load. Don't ask whether it's good having one of those guys helping out on third down.

"It's a definite positive, anytime you have depth at any position," Jackson said. "I think we have depth now at the offensive line, at the tight ends, we have a lot of receivers here. Anytime you have depth where if a guy so happens to come up hurt, a guy needs a blow, youíll have guys thatíll be able to fill into the positions, give a guy a break and that helps us overall."

The subject changed to Harvey Dahl's addition at right guard. Jackson called it the team's best move.

But when a reporter asked how the new, improved backfield would remove pressure from quarterback Sam Bradford, Jackson offered up a reminder.

"I think I always take the pressure off of Sam," Jackson said.

Right, but the new running backs could still lengthen Jackson's career, no?

"I think the Dahl addition lengthens my career," Jackson said. "I am very excited about the new additions and they will help us get better."

Whenever he has a season below 1000 yards will be when I question his age being an issue.
