Schefter: Rob Ryan hired as Defensive Coordinator!

The St. Louis Rams have hired Rob Ryan as their defensive coordinator, a league source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

The boisterous Ryan was fired as defensive coordinator of the Dallas Cowboys on Jan. 8, soon after owner Jerry Jones said he would make major changes to a team that finished 8-8 and missed the playoffs.

After his ouster in Dallas, Ryan said, "I'll be out of work for like five minutes."

Jones alluded to two losses -- at Seattle in Week 2 and to Chicago at Cowboys Stadium in Week 4, when Dallas' defense was almost completely healthy -- as part of the reasons he let Ryan go.

Under Ryan, the Cowboys' defense was 19th overall, 17th against the run and 21st against the pass.

Last season, the Rams' defense was coached by a host of assistants after proposed defensive coordinator Gregg Williams was suspended by the NFL for his role in the New Orleans Saints' bounty scandal. The team announced earlier this month that Williams, who has yet to be reinstated by the NFL, won't be with the team next season.

Rams coach Jeff Fisher has a relationship with the Ryan family. He played under Rob's father, Buddy, in Chicago and also was a defensive coordinator under him in Philadelphia.

Ugggghhhh me no likey. First Brian Shottenheimer, then Blake Williams, and now Rob Ryan... what is it about the mediocre sons of respected coordinators that Jeff Fisher loves so much?!?

Not what I had hoped for, but I support almost anything Jeff Fisher wants as he has made us competitive team once again. So I will join the ranks and get behind Rob Ryan as our next DC. I hope he takes our defense to the next level.

The hiring of Rob Ryan may have come down to the simple fact that he knows how to CALL a game. In other words he understands what the offense is trying to do and has a better feel for down and distance and other situations.

The reason I say that is that I have read that Blake Williams made some horrific calls and none worst than in the Vikings game that cost us big time.

One of them was with the Vikes on their own 18 he plays pass and calls for a blitz and 82 yards later Adrian Peterson cruises into the end zone.

We just can't afford foolish mistakes like that. Ryan should be much better at calling the defense and making the appropriate adjustments.

I am RAMarkable and I approve of this post.

100% agree with Jeff here. Someone go show me a DC thats had the #1 ranked D in the league 5 times, please? Not going to happen.. Good co-ordinators get HC jobs. Ryan is solid (my belief) and I fully trust Fisher. I think it'll be a nice match made in heaven!

I think Fisher wants an aggressive play caller. I don't think Fisher will not be part of the defense along with Dave McGinnis this should work out. Not my first choice but better then waiting on Williams or hiring him back and dealing with that mess.

Its comical to watch the reporters trip over each other trying to "break the story." Who cares who gets it first. Just get it right.

Assuming (as it now seems) that Ryan is hired, I'm on board 100%. Jeff Fisher knows what he's doing, particularly when it comes to defense.

Ryan has an agreement with the Rams to become their defensive coordinator, a source close to Ryan told NFL.com's Ian Rapoport. The same source told Rapoport that the deal will happen.

Im pretty amped up. Last year we managed to have a top 15 D with a DC (Blake called 90-95% of the plays) who had never done the job before. Heck, some of our players were older than our DC (Talk about the respect level). Now we actually have a real DC, someone who is passionate about the game, someone who is going to get our guys some swagger and get our guys amped up!

Ryan is not my first choice, but I think he will do well under Fisher.
