Seriously, what's our deal with the niners?

MOD'S FRIENDLY WARNING: You will notice this thread is in "Ram Talk", not the "Smack Forum". Had I wanted it in the "Smack Forum", I would have put it there. Any smack will be deleted.

In the past two seasons, the niners are 3-0 against us, and 2-15 against everyone else, including 0-5 against the rest of the NFC-West. In the same time, we have a winning record (9-8) without the niners in our schedule.

What is this mental block over the past 1.25 years that keeps us from bringing our game against the crimson and flaxen? The rest of the league has no problem sticking it to them, and we have no problem with the rest of the league (at least slightly more than half the time).

    So, what's the deal?

"Before the gates of excellence the high gods have placed sweat; long is the road thereto and rough and steep at first; but when the heights are reached, then there is ease, though grievously hard in the winning." --- Hesiod

    the refs get bribed.
    the media hate us.
there is a geological fault line under whatever they call home and its attuned to us.
    all of the above.

Hub good question. My opinion is that Nolon has gotten his players fired up for this rivalry. He wants to dominate it & he's of to a good start. Please keep in mind most of these games are hard fought battles with close scores as most division games are no matter which team is winning. I do belive things will change when the whiners come to town.

Reminds me a lot of how the Big Dead used to be for America's Team. They'd stink all season, but when the Cowboys came to town, they'd almost always give them a scare, if not pull off the upset. It sure feels like the Whiners are taking the rivalry more seriously lately than the Rams are. I also don't think it helps that the game in SF comes early in the schedule all the time lately. How about bringing the Whiners here in September and making them the Rams' home opener opponent for a change, NFL?

Re: Seriously, what's our deal with the niners?

The Niners/Rams HATE each other, and no matter what the niners record is, they get pumped like it's the playoffs when they play us, and it seems the Rams don't anymore and tend to overlook a "crappy" niner team. Back in the peak of the niner domination and the Rams extended stay in the basement, it was the other way. The Rams used to give them niners hell every game and stole a few, and almost won a few others. The Ram veterans and coaching staff needs to do a better job of preparing the Rams to play the niners. They need to play up the tradition, the history, and what could be argued as one of the best rivalries in football.

And the win by the niners this year at home was in the books before it started. I was in frisco at the game. It is the niners 60th anniversary; it was their home opener; ex niner NFL legends were at the game; the festivities (pregame and halftime) were very emotional and fired up the home crowd. I don't even think the Rams were introduced when the ran onto the field (if they were, I missed it)...they just kinda ran out and the only reason I knew they were coming was because a few Rams fans started cheering. The Rams played their guts out despite the untimely loss of Pino and Pace, but could never overcome the huge wave of momentum and emotion the niners were playing with.

The niner fans were much different than I was expecting. I was expecting a bunch of softies, but it was quite the opposite. I was pretty vocal in my cheering and support of the Rams, which resulted in beer being thrown on me, being spit on, being threatened that I was gonna get my ass kicked numerous times, and hundreds of F bombs being hurled my way from people sections away. It was pretty funny, I was wearing my Jackson jersey, so niner fans from all over were yelling, "Hey Jackson, STFU!" or "F U Jackson" or "Sit down JAckson you POS".

Worst thing that happened though was my 8 months pregnant wife who was wearing a Holt jersey had a group of niner fan women threaten her in the bathroom that they were going to kill her. If not for my sister-in-law who is a niner fan and wearing a niner jersey being with her, who knows what would have happened. After the game was over and we were walking out of the stadium, all the niner fans were talking trash, and a few still throwing cups and whatever at me, but nothing too serious. That is until a group of 5 guys in their 20's, obviously drunk, rushed me and got up close and flipping me off right in my face and insulting me and the Rams, calling me a pussy, etc. They kept trying to get me to fight and I was already pissed off we lost, was sick of all the abuse I had been taking, and was ready to throw down myself, so it took everything in me not take them all on. My brother a niner fan, in niner gear, got in between me and the worst of that group to try to make peace, but they were such idiots they wanted to fight him too. They went so far as to get up in my sister-in-law's face and cuss her out and one guy actually slapped her. Somehow neither my brother or I saw this and she didnt tell us til a few minutes later when they guys were gone. God was with those 5 guys because I swear on my life if either of us would have seen them touch her, those guys woulda wished they never were born.

There was also another half of the niner fans who were respectful and I had fun listening to their stories of the history of candlestick park, the players, the rivalry, the watering of the field against strong running teams, the swirling wind in the end zones, etc. And even though I left with my clothes reeking of beer, getting insulted 100's of times, narrowly avoiding a brawl and the Rams losing the game, I had a blast at the game.

So to sum it all up, we need to beat the niners into submission in the dome this year, or I'm gonna puke.

Wow RamFan_Til_I_Die, props to you for keeping your cool. You're the better man for doing so. Of course, you're a Rams fan, so it's to be expected.

Even the chicks were throwing out the crap? Unbelievable. Raider fans must be migrating to the other side of the bay....

That's one of the reasons I'm hesitant to wear "my colors" in those situations. I know I'll lose it if some ahole gets in my grill. In fact, years ago, I had a run-in with a Raider fan in a sports bar. Ahole kept pointing his foam finger in my face during a Rams/Raiders game. Told him to stop, or I'd make him eat the F***ing thing... He did it ONE more time at the end of the game.

Foam is hard to digest, me thinks....

At this point, I'd just chalk it up to the "division rival equalizer" concept. I think the Rams will handle the Whiners fairly easily in St. Louis, though.

You have no idea the restraint it took to not to throw down. Like I said before we didn't see her getting touched, and didn't even know until after the guys were long gone. I was even more pissed when I did find out and wanted to go try to find them in the parking lot, but my wife talked me out of it.

Thats crazy man I was there and go every year I never have dealt with that type of crap there.I think sports fans as a whole are getting out of hand this crap needs to stop. Is it gonna get to the point where the only time we could enjoy our team playing is to catch a home game? I will be at the Chargers Rams game this year I hope I dont deal with that type of crap there. I know in the pre-season game last year there was alot of a-holes.

Well unfortunately there probably will be especially in the Ucker section.

I was at the Cards/Rams game in AZ back in 04' and sat next to a couple from Tennessee who were Ram fans. They were both faced before kick off, slurring every time they talked, and once the game started expletives were being thrown all over the place. I was annoyed and embarrassed that these were Ram fans and the home crowd though that I was with them.
Well, at halftime the gal left (probably for a restroom break and more beer) and the guy left his seat and went down to the lower seats to yell at our team heading into the lockeroom. The next thing I saw was him being escorted by security out of the section.

There are a-holes at every venue these days, some worse than others.
JUST WIN ONE FOR THE FANS

I can feel the pain. I'm to stubborn to not wear my team colors. So leaning towards avoiding road games.

Wear the colors. I personally would rather get threatened and crap thrown at me, than go to a game and silently watch in street clothes for fear of what might happen. If it's that bad, save the cash and watch at home. But really I don't think it's that bad, most idiots get kicked out when they do stuff like what happened to me. At any time had I gotten up and found an usher or someone in security they would have dealt with the people harassing us. Unfortunately, I was way too into the game to get up from my seat.
