Shaun Hill should look to a QB who got his shot in 1999

In 1999, a QB who had never been "the guy" finally got a chance to become a full-time starter. In the next few seasons, he put up big numbers, and lead his team to a winning record.

And, no... I'm not talking about Kurt Warner.

    I'm talking about Rich Gannon.

Gannon, like Hill, was a journeyman who finally got a chance to be a full-time starter at the age of 34. In his first year, he lead the Raiders to an 8-8 record while posting very respectable numbers (24 TDs, 14 Ints., 3,840 yards, 86.5 passer rating). In the three years that followed, he lead the Raiders to a 33-15 record, including 3 playoff appearances.

So, yes... there is such a thing as a "late bloomer" at the QB position.

Let's all get behind Shaun "Not Quite Over The" Hill.

If Hill could pull off what Gannon did, that would be fun to watch this year.

What's Hill's arm like? I was only young at the time, but I seem to remember that Gannon didn't exactly have a cannon.

Neither does Hill. He can make a lot of the throws but he doesn't have a cannon for the deep ball.

    - - Rich Gannon

Gannon's awards, records from 1999 on. Interesting.

NFL record for most completions in a non-OT game: 43 (vs. Steelers, 2002)

    ====================================================

Would be great to see Shaun Hill follow that lead as the new Rams starting QB.

The play book looks pretty simple with nothing too wild...Run first, chop and drop passing with the threat of a deep pass to keep defenses honest...Hill should succeed in that role. Will miss Bradford's accurate deep ball we know he can throw.

Me thinks one Jake Long feels 2inches tall...perhaps the worst game he ever played...he needs to step big to redeem himself

Damn that O-line, makes me sick its still an issue especially with a Fisher team

I'm glad you weren't talking about Warner, because he had a couple advantages (Holt, Bruce, Pace, Martz). Same for Bulger. I think the Gannon comparison is a very good one, though, and hopefully will still be a good one over the next few years.

I can't help but shake my head when people say we're doomed, and that the only bright spot is that we're going to have a high pick to grab a QB next year. If by high pick, you mean top 20...maybe. We're not getting anywhere near top 10, though. We didn't have Sam when we torched playoff teams like Indianapolis and New Orleans. We were 7-9 last year, and we made significant improvements in the offseason, so I'd be disappointed in anything less than 9 wins, and I don't think 10-6 is even a bold prediction. Sure, I thought we were darkhorse contenders if Bradford was healthy, but all we need is an efficient QB to have a winning record.

That bottom picture, post #8 ... almost a premonition from #8. As if Bradford were thinking about Hill, "you'll be fine bro -- go for it".

    Go Rams.

The Chucky Raiders weren't dissimilar to The Rams, either. Diversified rush attack, aggressive front seven.
I like it....wth, better than hoping to tank for draft position.

That's interesting, because I'm pretty sure that 2000 NFL MVP trophy on my mantle has my name on it.....said Marshal Faulk.

Great point. With Ritchie and Crockett, they utilized their FB more than Fisher's Rams, but a lot of similiarities between Wheatley/Kaufman and Stacy/Mason/Cunningham. We don't have a Tim Brown, but I like our receivers better than theirs in '99. I like our DL a whole lot better, even with pro bowler Darrell Russell on theirs. I like our LBs better as well. Pretty sure they have us in the secondary though. I don't see any Woodson/Allen/Turner clones in ours.

And they were just 3 years from going to the big show. Ok, I'll take it.

    Indeed it does.

    Warner won MVP in 1999

    Faulk won MVP in 2000

Warner won MVP again in 2001. Although I always thought Faulk deserved the 2001 MVP, no slight to Warner, he was awesome, but I thought Faulk was better in 01.
