Shaw, Dallas' defensive boss will meet

    By Jim Thomas
    ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
    01/05/2006

The search for the next Rams head coach begins in earnest today when team president John Shaw interviews Dallas defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer.

Zimmer, 49, is a native of Peoria, Ill., who played college football at Illinois State and was an assistant coach at the University of Missouri in 1979-80.

Zimmer has spent all 12 of his NFL seasons with the Cowboys, breaking in with Barry Switzer in 1994 as a defensive assistant and subsequently working for Chan Gailey, Dave Campo and now Bill Parcells.

He has spent the past five seasons as the team's defensive coordinator, in which time the Cowboys finished among the NFL's top 10 in total defense three times, including a No. 10 ranking this season.

The Cowboys switched to the 3-4 scheme this season, the first time Zimmer has coached that alignment in his career.

Should he become a head coach, either in St. Louis or elsewhere, it is believed he will switch back to the 4-3.

Zimmer is the first candidate to be interviewed by the Rams. It was unclear Wednesday night if that interview would take place in St. Louis.

On Friday, the Rams will interview Bears defensive coordinator Ron Rivera in Chicago. Rivera also is drawing interest from Green Bay.

On Monday, the Rams are scheduled to interview New York Giants defensive coordinator Tim Lewis. Lewis also is drawing interest from New Orleans.

Shaw may squeeze in another interview before the weekend is out as well: the Rams have received permission to interview Miami offense coordinator Scott Linehan, and could speak with him as early as Friday.

There was speculation a month ago that Linehan might be a potential candidate in St. Louis.

But since the ouster Monday of Mike Martz, Linehan's name had not come up until now.

    Linehan has interviewed in Houston.

The Rams also have received permission to talk to Denver offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak, but no interview is scheduled. Kubiak may not be available for an interview until the Broncos are out of the playoffs.

Under league rules, Kubiak can only be interviewed this week because the Broncos have a first-round bye in the playoffs.

By the end of the weekend, Kubiak will have interviewed with Detroit and Houston. Kubiak is not thought to be in the Rams' top tier of candidates.

In another development, the Rams received permission to interview Philadelphia defensive coordinator Jim Johnson, but Johnson has told the Eagles he's staying.

    Rams, Martz are near settlement

The Rams are close to an agreement on a contract settlement with Martz. The agreement should be finalized today.

Shaw spent part of Wednesday in negotiations with Martz's agent, Bob LaMonte.

Martz was scheduled to make $3.25 million next season, the final year of his contract with the club.

    More players sign

Tight end Darius Williams and wide receiver Dominique Thompson have been signed to the Rams' offseason roster. Both players ended the '05 season on the practice squad.

Four other players have agreed to terms: wide receiver Taylor Stubblefield, offensive tackle Jason Hilliard; tight end Rod Trafford; and running back Fred Russell.

Did I ever mention that I hate Dallas? We would do better with Rivera. I wonder if he has a loaf list?

This guy turned Nebraska down in 2004. He can't be all bad.
