As the Rams sort through their options at wide receiver, another option cropped up when the Detroit Lions released Johnnie Morton.
Rams officials said the club is definitely interested in Morton. In fact, the Rams were in the process of setting up a visit with Morton on Friday afternoon. Any visit would take place after next week, following the NFL owners meetings in Orlando, Fla. Whether the Rams can afford Morton and whether he's willing to be a No. 3 receiver in St. Louis remains to be seen. Morton, 30, was released by the Lions on Thursday, one day before he was due a roster bonus of $1 million. Morton was scheduled to make a base salary of $3 million this coming season and would have counted $5.34 million against the salary cap.
Morton was a first-round draft pick of the Lions in 1994 out of Southern California. He has never made the Pro Bowl, but he's caught 61 or more passes in each of the past five seasons, and has logged four 1,000-yard seasons in the NFL. Last season, he caught 77 passes for a career-high 1,154 yards.
At 6-0, 190, Morton can make the tough catch as well as anybody in the NFL. His release came as a surprise in Detroit, because earlier this week coach Marty Mornhinweg said the Lions planned to keep him.
Free-agent receivers Joe Jurevicius of the New York Giants and Terrence Wilkins of Indianapolis visited Rams Park on Friday. They followed Jacquez Green of Tampa Bay, who was in a week earlier. One thing is certain: the Rams' No. 3 receiver in 2002 will not be Cris Carter. Carter has left a couple of phone messages for Martz since last week's visit fiasco, but Martz hasn't returned those calls.
Barber to EaglesLinebacker Shawn Barber, a free agent from the Washington Redskins, was scheduled to arrive in St. Louis on Friday evening for a visit. But Barber canceled his visit, instead signing a one-year deal with Philadelphia.
The Rams would like to add another outside linebacker, and Chicago restricted free agent Warrick Holdman remains one possibility.
Offer made to LandetaRams officials confirmed that the team made a one-year, $750,000 contract offer to veteran punter Sean Landeta. But Landeta decided to stay with Philadelphia, signing a one-year deal. Landeta punted for the Rams from 1993-96.
Martz and La RussaMartz has talked to Cardinals manager Tony La Russa a few times on the phone, but they've never met. That changes Sunday when Martz will take in the Cardinals' spring training game against the Florida Marlins in Viera, Fla.
Martz is leaving today for Orlando and the NFL owners meetings. "It's about an hour from Orlando," Martz said. "I'm going to rent a car and just go. I've never been to spring training before."
La Russa has invited Martz to watch the game with him in the Cardinals' dugout. "I don't know Tony that well, but I like him," Martz said. "I'm kind of anxious to meet him."
