Spagnuolo available to talk---Mystery Candidate Emerging?

Giants' loss makes Spagnuolo available to talk
    By Jim Thomas
    ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
    Monday, Jan. 12 2009
Steve Spagnuolo is available as a result of the New York Giants' 23-11 upset
loss Sunday to Philadelphia in the NFC playoffs.

Now, the Rams must figure out how — or even if — the Giants' defensive
coordinator fits into their head-coaching plans. Rams general manager Billy
Devaney has known Spagnuolo for years and considers him a good friend. With
that in mind, Spagnuolo probably advances to finalist interview status with the
Rams this week in Los Angeles if Spagnuolo is willing.

But there is competition for his services. Spagnuolo, 49, already has been
interviewed by Denver and the New York Jets for their head-coaching vacancies.
As of early Sunday evening, the Rams still hadn't requested permission from the
    Giants to speak with Spagnuolo.

But that's a mere formality. Under league guidelines, once a candidate is given
permission to talk to one team, he can't be blocked from interviewing with
    others.

Devaney had a busy Sunday, interviewing Baltimore Ravens defensive
coordinator-assistant head coach Rex Ryan in the morning in Baltimore. Ryan
interviewed with the Jets later Sunday.

"They were standard meetings and they went well," Ryan told the Balitmore Sun
on Sunday night. "Now we're going to see what happens."

Ryan's interview with the Rams lasted about three hours. His Jets interview
lasted about five hours and included team owner Woody Johnson.

From a Rams standpoint, early indications are that Ryan's interview with them
went well. Devaney feels like he has viable options for the next head coach, no
matter what the next few days bring.

Following the Ryan interview, Devaney flew back to St. Louis, where he was
scheduled to interview Mike Williams of the San Francisco *****' front office
Sunday night for the Rams' position of director of pro personnel.

The Post-Dispatch has learned that New England offensive
coordinator-quarterbacks coach Josh McDaniels never made it to St. Louis on
Friday evening for his head-coaching interview. McDaniels was tied up with a
second interview with Denver and never made it out of New England. Instead he
spoke with Devaney on the phone. Reports out of Denver on Sunday night said the
    Broncos had hired McDaniels.

Devaney is leaving today for Los Angeles, where Minnesota defensive
coordinator-assistant head coach Leslie Frazier will have his finalist
    interview with team ownership Tuesday.

So far, current Rams coach Jim Haslett is the only other known finalist.

However, league sources told the Post-Dispatch that there apparently is an
unknown candidate — a Rams mystery candidate, if you will — whose name hasn't
been mentioned yet in media reports.

I think Rex Ryan is the leader in the clubhouse....

If Spagnuolo has his choice of jobs - he will probably go elsewhere. If I was Spagnuolo - I would try to go to Denver because it is the premier job by far.

Wow! If Spags can take McDaniels' job just hours after getting it, then he really is a miracle worker!

    yeah Hub,

I saw that on ESPN about 20 minutes after my post this morning.....Sorry, yes, media reports that Josh McDaniels got the Denver job.

My question about Denver now is this - they don't have a GM since Shanahan carried the dual role and I know McDaniels does not want both roles - does this mean Scott Pioli is heading to Denver as GM? It was widely thought that McDaniels/Pioli would be a package deal when the GM/HC positions came up.

Has Scott Pioli even interviewed for GM Post in Denver? please advise if anybody knows.

Hmm. Interesting point. If that's the case, an argument could be made that Pioli is the better part of that deal.

absolutely........I would not be suprised at all if "the other shoe drops" and Scott Pioli is anounced this week as GM.....

If the Broncos get Scott Pioli as GM to bolster the roster (especially defensive side) and Josh McDaniels to continue to improve on Jay Cutler, Brandon Marshall and Eddie Royal - well then "LOOK OUT!" because the Denver Broncos will be a force in the future.

Re: Spagnuolo available to talk---Mystery Candidate Emerging?

Is this mystery candidate already in the NFL or is currently out of the NFL?

My guess is Ron Rivera, who I'm sure we all wanted picked as Head Coach AFTER Linehan's 1st year.

    Or maybe, Marshall Faulk?

Maybe being part of this whole head coaching search intrigued him and made him realize he could be a coach someday, or now.
