Spagnuolo came pretty cheaply

Decision made: Spanuolo to be the next Rams’ coach

The St. Louis Rams have hired Steve Spagnuolo as their head coach, giving him a four-year, $11.5 million contract.

A 4 year deal for $11.5 million is $2.875 million per year. He was making something like $2.25 million as the DC of the G-men. It's a long ways from the $5 or 6 million per year that had been speculated it would take to get a hot name like Spags to begin with.Last edited by Nick; -01-17-2009 at 03:55 PM. Reason: No links

Re: Spagnuolo came pretty cheaply
Those are very manageable numbers; much less than I had expected he would command.

Re: Spagnuolo came pretty cheaply
Seems down right cheap for a guy as allegedly in demand as Spags was. I think the last thing I saw was one of the PD guys saying they believed the number would be at least $4 mil per year or so for Spags.
This is good. Should leave them more money to spend on coordinators and assistant coaches.

Re: Spagnuolo came pretty cheaply
I too am glad they got a guy licking his chops at the challenge.
I also like that he was up front with exactly what he wanted and expected, which was control over the 53 man roster and hiring his coaching staff.
He won't be anybodies lackey. Though at the same time, his perspective on how that structure should work appears to be right in line with Devaney's stated perspective on it and they should have a great working relationship since they are friends and obviously enjoyed working together, though briefly, in the past

Good to see. Shows he's not about the money, he's about winning.

Re: Spagnuolo came pretty cheaply
This is especially amusing considering how Rotoworld seemed to bust on the Rams earlier in this process for a perception that they were going to do this on the cheap. Instead they get one of the hottest coaching candidates of the offseason for under $3 million a year.

Re: Spagnuolo came pretty cheaply
I think the HC jobs can disappear fast and if you hold out for to much your left out.
Then next year you become yesterdays news.
Prove yourself and then you make the big money in the next contract.
Cower or dungy will make 6million a year because they earned it.
By the way I would take 2 million to coach an NFL team. I am not to good for that.

Re: Spagnuolo came pretty cheaply
2.875 mil per year is damn cheap considering that he is the leader of the players and coaches. He sets the tone for the way the players and coaches carry themselves. We saw what a weak leader like Linehan can do it causes the players to start thinking about everything but football. We need a leader that commands respect from both coaches and players. That way their focused on one thing football.

Re: Spagnuolo came pretty cheaply
You know what could be scary (or maybe not scary but relevant)? Garrett may have turned down the Rams from a financial standpoint. He's already making 3 million a year and the Rams paid Spagnuolo 2.875 mil. Why would Garrett take a paycut to be the HC of the Rams when he might get a pay raise and become the HC of the Cowboys soon?

Re: Spagnuolo came pretty cheaply
Not sure how this compares to what other first time NFL head coaches have signed for over the last few seasons?
Is it more, less or about the going rate for a guy with no experience or proven track record as a head coach?
