Special teams coach is among those let go

    By Jim Thomas
    ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
    Saturday, Jan. 24 2009
The hiring of a new head coach usually means an almost entirely new coaching
staff. So as Steve Spagnuolo works his way through his list of prospective
hires for his first Rams staff, he's also breaking the bad news to holdovers
from the 2008 staff who are being let go.

Al Roberts, the Rams' special teams coordinator for the past two seasons, got
his bad news Thursday night. That's when Roberts said he was informed by
Spagnuolo that he was not being retained.

"He said he thought we did a good job, but he just wanted to go another
direction," Roberts said Friday. "He wanted to hire guys that he knew or his
    coordinators knew."

Roberts, 65, joined the Rams' staff in 2007. The Rams' return units improved
noticeably that season, particularly when Dante Hall was healthy. St. Louis
finished fourth in the NFL in punt return average and was ninth in kickoff
    return average.

But Rams coverage units left much to be desired in '07, finishing 32nd (or
last) in kickoff coverage and 18th in punt coverage.

This season, with Hall making it through only eight games before suffering a
season-ending ankle injury, the return game dropped off noticeably, finishing
21st in punt returns and 22nd in kickoff returns.

The coverage units didn't allow a punt or kickoff return for a TD in '08, the
first time that's happened with the Rams since the 1999 Super Bowl championship
season. But the units still sprung several leaks, finishing 22nd in punt
coverage and 32nd (again) in kickoff coverage.

Among other holdover assistants who have been told they do not fit in
Spagnuolo's plans, head strength and conditioning coach Dana LeDuc said goodbye
to friends and co-workers Thursday. Veteran quarterbacks coach Terry Shea
cleaned out his desk on Friday.

Some holdover assistants who are still being considered for jobs are scheduled
to meet with new offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur and new defensive
coordinator Ken Flajole over the next few days.

I wish we could have a special teams coach for more than two years. I don't think that will happen until we improve the personnel on those units. Bobby April got ran out of here, then immediately had some success in Buffalo. That should show you the problem right there.
