    Spine problem hobbles Hanifan

Even in retirement, Jim Hanifan has remained a Rams Park regular, dropping by to visit players or look at tape. But Hanifan sightings have been few at training camp this year because of back problems.

Within the past month and a half, Hanifan began experiencing sharp pain in his lower back and legs. Turns out Hanifan has stenosis of the spine, which could lead to back surgery if treatment and physical therapy don't improve his condition.

"Some people are born with the thing," said Hanifan, 71, who ended a 31-year career as an NFL coach following the 2003 season with the Rams. "I don't know how long I've had it. Obviously, it just didn't happen overnight."

Hanifan was in Las Vegas for a reunion with old Army pals in late June when he began having cramps in his legs. Things got so bad that he ended up leaving Las Vegas in a wheelchair.

"What you get is like electric shocks," Hanifan said. "They come down the back of your legs, right down to your ankles."

So he decided to get his back checked out and was told that he had stenosis of the spine, a narrowing of the spinal chord passageway. He has been taking shots to reduce the inflammation around the spinal cord, without success.

"The first two shots sure as hell didn't work," Hanifan said.

Hanifan, who does analyst work for the Rams radio network, was at Rams Park on Friday using a walker to get around. He spent the last seven seasons of his NFL career coaching the Rams' offensive line.
