St. Louis Rams re-sign offensive lineman Adam Goldberg

St. Louis Rams re-sign offensive lineman Adam Goldberg
    By Jim Thomas
    St. Louis Post-Dispatch

The Rams added much-needed depth to their offensive line Friday, re-signing Adam Goldberg to a two-year deal. Contract terms weren’t immediately available. Goldberg has been a valuable backup/spot starter for St. Louis since being acquired in a trade with Minnesota just before the start of the 2006 season. Last season, he started at least one game at both guard and both tackle positions on the offensive line. Goldberg reportedly paid a free-agent visit to Cleveland before deciding to re-sign with St. Louis.

Good move, can't argue with this at all.

The fact he can play both guard and tackle makes him very useful, i'm glad he's back.

I also get the feeling Tx is going to make a comment about the quality of this signing and how this effects the depth of this team.

    Great signing. Excellent depth.

Actually for this I don't have a problem. Goldberg is established. It's when we get Joe Blow off the trash truck and there will be clannies swear they saw him play last year for the Jets or whomever but it turns out that the dude played AFL2 league or something. It happened a bunch 2 to 3 years ago so i just started saying Great signing. Excellent depth as a joke.

This is a great resign. Goldberg is a four position player, and has proven he can fill voids, particularly at guard.

While it may be true technically that goldberg can play tackle, i think he stinks at that position. He is a servicable backup guard, a spot where we already have at least three guys (bell, cogs and greco). I dont believe we have a backup center at this point as both romberg and lechey signed elsewhere (not that i am going to miss either of them, especially lechey). In short, while i dont really have a problem with signing goldberg, it certainly doesnt get me excited and it doesnt go very well with the youth movement as he has limited to no upside.

We needed depth on the line and we got it, even though he isn't the best tackle that is where we need the depth most. We still need some depth at center unless we are going to go with Corry Withrow or Setterstrom

Good solid depth at a position we need... Can't complain... He's not a great starter or he would be on another team starting obviously, but he is at times worth a spot start and a vaible option at multiple positions....

Agree bigtime. They should of let him go. If we are rebuilding then rebuild. This guy has no value. Bring on the young guys...

Decent depth OLman. Five years experience (52 games played). Good signing, IMO.

I hope our OL stays relatively healty and Adam plays mostly as backup. He's been a starter, yes, but seems to be in mid development stages.

A veteran lineman that can play four positions on the line has no value?

Good, fair question / reply RI.

For sure, Goldberg gives good value to our OL depth. I look forward to an improved Rams OL this year -- it "cannot" repeat its poor performance of last year, i.e., it can "only" get better despite not having Pace in there.

I think AG will contribute to that improvement.

I agree he has some value, but i think jerseyrams point, and its a good one, is that if we are rebuilding, lets rebuild, and do it with young guys that have upside. Do you really want goldberg playing on this team before scheuring and greco get a chance?

This idea makes no sense to me. You can't make a team of all rookies. It isn't like we are asking this guy to start and he probably wasn't expensive. We are asking him to be an insurance policy for the young guys who have gotten hurt. Goldberg is valuable because he can fill in at 4 spots. We need some experience and we don't want a huge drop off by throwing an inexperienced guy into the fire when he is not ready. That just hurts that players development and the team.

Grecco is currently the first team guard so Goldberg isn't really a threat. We don't even know what we have in Schuening yet so it would be foolish to label him a reliable backup.

Re: St. Louis Rams re-sign offensive lineman Adam Goldberg

I didnt label schuering a reliable backup. What i said was that you will never know whether he is reliable, backup or otherwise, unless he plays. Greco is not automatically a starter now, he is going to battle cogs after we draft a tackle. Goldberg hardly qualifies as a reliable backup tackle. he is a reliable backup guard, but to me, greco or cogs is the backup guard. The area where we have no depth at all is center.

In short, if we were a contending team, i would love this signing. Given the rebuilding nature of the team, i am simply lukewarm about it.
