St. Louis Rams release QB Green and WR Bennett

    Jim Thomas reports:
The Rams will have a new backup quarterback in 2009. The team released Trent Green, who was one year into his second tour of duty with the team on Wednesday in a move that saves the team $1.3 million of salary cap space.

A local favorite, Green, 38, attended Vianney High and grew up in suburban Oakville. He played in three games for the Rams last season, including a start against Buffalo on Sept. 28 after then head coach Scott Linehan had benched Marc Bulger.

But any chance Green had of continuing as starting quarterback was gone after that game, a 31-14 loss in which Green completed 17 of 32 passes but threw a costly interception. Linehan was fired after that game, and interim head coach Jim Haslett immediately re-instated Bulger as the starter.

The departure of Green, a two-time Pro Bowler who was with the Rams previously in 1999 and 2000, means the Rams will have a new No. 2 quarterback in 2009. One possibility is Tampa Bay free agent Jeff Garcia, who played for Rams offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur in Philadelphia in 2006.

The team also released wide receiver Drew Bennett, who had been a major disappointment since signing a $30 million free-agent contract two years ago. Bennett’s relieve is a wash, saving the team only $50,000 in cap space.

    WELL FOLKS HES GONE!!!

An extra $1.35 mil? I'll take it.

Bennett being released was bound to happen, i just never thought it would be this year. Maybe Spags just wanted to get the stench of failure out of St Louis.

I applaud both moves. Bennett doesn't save us anything really, but now he's going to be completely off the books in 2010. YES!

Dude?!?! Do you not know how many nachos we could get for $50,000? Like 10,000 or so!

You tell me......which do you want?.......Bennett or 10,000 plates of nachos?

    Yea, I thought so.

It wasn't Bennett's fault, he really wasn't that good to begin with. However, if someone throws that much money at you why not sign? I'd say if releasing Bennett gave us room for a large Imo's pepperoni that would be enough for me.

So that means we keep Holt and trade pace?

This just takes another wide receiver away from us. We're going to have to keep Holt in order to have a steady wide receiver corps.

I feel bad for Green, he's had a steady NFL career. But we're moving forward. Good moves.

I don't think it means anything more than Bennett is no longer a Ram. I doubt it was a "Holt or Bennett" thing.

Green is at the end of his career so I'm sure he's not surprised. Bennett being constantly injured had to see this coming as well. It's all just part of the business, no hard feelings fellas.

    Exit stage left!!!!

Ps. if a new CBA comes in next year. Does releasing Bennett this year save us even more next year?

Wow... I'm excited here... This and getting rid of the old FO were all I've wanted for two years... and now its here!

Just need the leafs to trade Antropov and I'll almost be in Nirvana

Excellent news indeed. Glad to see this happening. This looks more and more like a no nonsense regime, which I like.
