St. Louis Rams Steven Jackson 'iffy' for Sunday

    By Bill Coats
    Friday, Oct. 31 2008
Make no mistake: Running back Steven Jackson wants to play Sunday, when the
Arizona Cardinals visit the Edward Jones Dome.

"I just think winning those two games ... you could really tell the difference.
We want that winning spirit in the locker room," Jackson said. "We just want to
get that bitter taste (of losing) out of our mouth."

The question, of course, is whether Jackson's strained thigh muscle, which kept
him out of Sunday's game at New England, will be healed enough to permit him to
play. No definitive answer has been forthcoming.

"I think he's going to be, again, a game-time decision," coach Jim Haslett said
after Thursday's practice. Jackson took some reps in the 11-on-11 team drills,
sharing time in the backfield with Antonio Pittman, Kenneth Darby and Travis

"The strength is there. So now, we'll just get some of the on-field work,"
Jackson said. "These last two days felt pretty good."

Still, Jackson has reported that his thigh is "not 100 percent, but it's not
something that's unbearable." That was the term he used to describe how it felt
when he worked out before the Patriots game, before being scratched.

Asked whether he was optimistic about his chances Sunday, Jackson paused and
then replied, "I'm practicing to play, if that tells you anything."

It looks as if the Rams might be without two starters on the defensive line.
End Leonard Little (hamstring) and tackle Adam Carriker (ankle) were limited to
individual drills Thursday. Haslett estimated their chances of suiting up
    Sunday at 50-50.

Carriker was injured Oct. 19 vs. Dallas; La'Roi Glover started in his place at
New England. Little left in the first half Sunday, with James Hall, Victor
Adeyanju and Eric Moore getting stepped-up duty in the rotation afterward.

Wide receiver Drew Bennett said that when he broke a bone in his left foot
Sept. 7 in the season-opener at Philadelphia, he was told he would be out four
to six weeks. Now, seven weeks have passed, and he has just received the OK to
    start running again.

Bennett said his recovery is going "way slower than I thought. I'm very
frustrated with how slow it's been. And they say it's only about three-quarters
healed. But I can't do any damage to it now, so I'm trying to work through the
pain a little bit and see where I'm at."

In any case, Bennett isn't interested in going on injured reserve, which would
    end his season.

Safety Todd Johnson will miss a second consecutive game while he waits for a
kidney that was bruised vs. the Cowboys to mend. Johnson was hurt while
covering a punt return and was hospitalized.

"I didn't feel like I was injured, per se, so I was a little surprised that
they had to keep me overnight," Johnson said. "But I guess when you've got
blood in your urine, that's not a good thing."

Johnson is scheduled for another examination Monday. "Then we'll take it from
there," he said. "If I continue to heal the way I did this past week, hopefully
I should be good to go."

Anticipating the Cardinals' pass-heavy attack, the Rams have worked on their
dime package extensively this week, deploying Jonathan Wade as the sixth
defensive back. ... Arizona is averaging a league-high 28.6 points per game.

I like what Jackson had to say. All the best to our injured players.

I bet Bennett is frustrated. Frustrated he won't make the starting lineup when he returns. Hi-oh!

If SJax doesn't play we are handing out another victory and possibly the season. This game should have been one where we could have moved into the division lead, but due to Jax injury that's not the case. I am convinced we could have beaten the officials last week had we had Jax out on the field. 1 more loss and it's time to contemplate 2009 draft.

    It's Jim not Chris
