Takeo Spikes, Other Vets Will Visit St. Louis Rams

Takeo Spikes will visit St. Louis Rams

Veteran linebacker Takeo Spikes made it clear after his release from the San Diego Chargers in March that he had no intentions of retiring because he still has "tread left on the tires."

Three months later, Spikes will make his first free-agent visit. The 36-year-old is meeting with the St. Louis Rams tonight and Wednesday morning, a source close to the veteran told NFL.com's Steve Wyche. ESPN's Adam Schefter first reported the news.

The Rams were thought to be set at linebacker after adding 2013 first-round pick Alec Ogletree to starters James Laurinaitis and Jo-Lonn Dunbar. Considering Ogletree's checkered off-the-field history, perhaps Spikes is being considered as veteran insurance.

Although Spikes is a liability in coverage at this stage of his career, he can still help out in base personnel. He was the Chargers' leading tackler over the past two seasons.

Hmm, no. IMHO, not a good fit. And I don't think Ogletree's "checkered off-the-field history" as the report says would justify Spikes at this stage of his career. Rams seem to be youth oriented right now.

I would absolutely love this signing. 16 years of KNOWLEDGE to bestow on not just the rookie Ogletree, but the young Dunbar & Laurinitis.

Couple that with the fact that I have always individually rooted for this guy due to the fact that he has never appeared in a playoff game in 219 NFL games (most games of any player in NFL HISTORY), and I would really love this signing.

Hoping we acquire him, and get this man to the damn playoffs!

Interesting contrast Holt81. Yes, knowledge and experience is one thing Spikes has, no doubt.

    We'll see soon enough.

Depends on the contract and how it hits the cap.
As a backup at MLB and part time coach on the field - excellent.
Not sure where else he'd really play on this defense.

Re: Takeo Spikes Will Visit St. Louis Rams

I am guessing that this is exploratory at best. The other day Sherrod Martin was in for a visit, now Spikes. I'm sensing the Rams are keeping tabs on players whom they may need to call upon if a roster player gets hurt or suspended. We have very little to spend on FA's at this time, so Snead and Fisher are probably looking to backstop themselves in the event of a problem.

The alternative theory is that Fisher wants some talented vets around for Training Camp to teach the rookies some things, while allowing them to showcase their skills to other teams who may need them. Look at the positions being explored, Safety and OLB. Positions where we drafted rookies.

    Go Rams!

he lead the Chargers in tackles the last 2 years. Whats to be lost here? lol. We don't want efficient tacklers?

Re: Takeo Spikes Will Visit St. Louis Rams

Considering the 2013 season will be a long campaign, having reserves with talent to fill in for the injured is always a good idea...add veteran sage advise to those new to the ranks of the NFL, is always welcome on a team--it just comes down to cost; yet considering the Rams "youth", perhaps Spikes could add a maturity and professionalism to the squad.

Well, according to Jim Thomas' RAM-BLINGS in the STL Post-Dispatch, Thur. June 13, a.m...

Veteran LB Takeo Spikes completed his free-agent visit Wednesday and left town without a contract offer. It was more of an exploratory visit for the Rams.

Might as well add this on instead of creating a new thread:

    Per Adam Schefter

After hosting former Chargers LB Takeo Spikes, Rams working out former Eagles/Browns LB Chris Gocong on Fri.

Sounds like an experience and rotation thing. He definitely would not start...but his experience will come in handy and his ability to fit in rotation as a backup would be great.

You can add Will WItherspoon to the list.

Free agent LB Will Witherspoon is visiting the Rams on Thursday.

Blast from the past. Witherspoon starred with the Rams from 2006-09, but the tank is running on "E" at 33 years of age. The 12-year veteran started all 16 games under coach Jeff Fisher in 2010 with the Titans. He recorded 47 tackles as a backup in 2012. His visit to St. Louis is his first known trip of free agency.

Does this mean "...thanks, but no thanks"?

As I was kind of anticipating it would since the 1st report of Spikes visiting the Rams.
