It takes a real optimist to find a parallel b/w 1998 and 2009, but here goes...

Late 1990s. Rams have multiple seasons of futility. As a result, they have several high draft choices, which they use for interior line players: Orlando Pace, Kevin Carter, Grant Wistrom. The team continues its futility.

Late 2000s. Rams have multiple seasons of futility. As a result, they have several high draft choices, which they use for interior line players: Chris Long, Jason Smith, Ndamukong Suh/Gerald McCoy/Derrick Morgan?

    1998/1999 - add a veteran O lineman: Adam Timmerman.

    2009 - add a veteran O lineman: Jason Brown

1998/1999 - make focal point of offense a multi-talented RB: Marshall Faulk

2009 - make focal poit of offense a multi-talented RB: Steven Jackson

1998/1999 - add young, talented WRs into the mix (Hakim, Holt)

2009 - add young, talented WRs into the mix (Avery, Gibson - okay, we need more than that... but this isn't a Mike Martz offense, so maybe one more guy will do)

1998/1999 - find a QB (Green, then Warner)

    2009 - find a QB (???? - need to work on that).

Here's the point. While the Rams need several more pieces, there is a similarity with respect to the manner in which the team is being built. Start with young interior linemen. Let them develop. Add a RB and a veteran OL to the mix. Then bolster the skill positions.

Perhaps the Rams are still a couple of years away from finding the right pieces to fully implement this plan (and, even then, there are no guarantees).

    Still, there are similarities.

(Told you this was going to be an optimistic post!)

Jan 2000 #1 team in pro football
April 2010 #1 pick in the draft.
At least 10 years later we can say we're still #1 at something. ;-)

All we need is for Keith Null or some sort of QB turn into an MVP QB who is the most accurate passer in NFL history; have Avery, Gibson or Robinson turn into 2 of the all time great receivers in NFL history, have Chris Long lead the league in sacks like Kevin Carter, get an offensive coordinator who at least looks like hes trying to put points on the board and fix tons of other problems and then we'll be there.

At least I got to think about when the Rams were great at one time.

    One question:

Do we also follow the decline again?

Is it a cycle that repeats over and over again?
