    Tavon Austin rookie numbers

Tavon Austin has compared himself to DeSean Jackson. I went and looked at Jackson's rookie numbers.

    16 games played

    62 REC, 121 TGTS, 912 Yards, 2 REC TD
    Rushing attempts 17, Yards 96, 1 TD
Punt returns 50 attempts, 440 Yards, 1 TD
    1 KR 12 Yards

    Totals

    4 TDs, 1460 all-propose yards.

So are these realistic expectations for Austin?

I think it's realistic to expect more than 2 receiving touchdowns. With his quickness, it's hard not seeing him be a viable threat in the redzone.

I'd probably set the bar a little lower considering the Rams' stated intent of spreading the ball around to a number of different receivers, but I don't think it's drastically unrealistic. I'd hope if he's targeted 121 times, he catches more than 61 of those passes.

    Re: Tavon Austin rookie numbers

I'd say he probably won't have that many receptions or receiving yards, but could exceed Jackson's rookie numbers in receiving TDs, rushing yards, and total TDs.

Truth be told, the stat I'll be looking at is big plays. I'll define those as runs of 15+ yards, receptions of 25+ yards, punt returns of 25+ yards, and kickoff returns of 40+ yards.

If Austin can give us 2-3 "big plays"/game under that definition, he'll be an impact player.

    Re: Tavon Austin rookie numbers

I don't think he tops 700 receiving yards. We have too many options in the offense to force feed him like we did with Amendola the past few years. As long as we win that's the only damn thing I care about.

    11-5 and Austin does horrible
    OR
    8-8 and Austin is amazing

    I think I'll take 11-5....

I would be careful about setting expectations too high. I read many posts from last year regarding Quick and how we should not expect too much out of first year receivers. Ellard and Bruce were cited as examples. Now, the Rams are not rich in receiving so the kid will get his chances. But I would expects others to have the balls thrown their way as much ( Cook, Givens, Pettis etc...)

600 yds receiving with about 100 in rushing as well as a punt return for a TD with a winning record for the team

Same here in terms of being conservative with TA's numbers. With the various WR and TE options this year, balance will probably be the key idea and 'make sense' strategy in the passing game. Still, Tavon Austin at the top in 2013 with 4 receptions per game 16x would be terrific.

Although as Sosa said, let's get those WINS preferably!

    Re: Tavon Austin rookie numbers

I understand that we need to keep a somewhat level head with the expectations for Austin. But that said we traded up to get him. We gave up a second and a seventh, moved back in the third round.

He's not a second round pick like Quick, he's a top ten pick. That's going to come with some return on investment day one if you ask me.

Torry Holt played in system that spread the ball around and he still had a nice rookie year.
788 yards and 6 TDs. He was the 6th player taken.

I asked the question because I'm trying to get a feel for what you guys are thinking he will do. Fans are headed to practice in droves to see this guy. I think the exceptions are going to be high maybe too high.

I agree with what you guys have said. I think he will be very productive when you add up all his yards. I don't see him getting close to 912 Yards receiving.

Your TA point / argument is well taken and a likely scenario!

How about 4.5 catches per game 16x and a YPR avg. of 11? Quite feasible. BTW, wasn't there someone else being groomed to return kicks? Can't remember.

He is only working as a PR right now. Who know that may change, I would think at some point he will return kickoffs.

I'm sure his head is spinning with all the stuff they are throwing at him.

As far as TD's and total yards, they are absolutely realistic. This is the guy who had 572 all-purpose yards on a Saturday night against Oklahoma last year. Obviously there's a big difference between college and the NFL, but I wouldn't bet against him matching Jackson.

    Re: Tavon Austin rookie numbers

It's hard for me to find a scenario in which this guy doesn't get the ball in his hands at least 5 times a game. Fast out routes will be common when the team needs a big play. It's way too easy to set expectations too high (I'm as bad as anyone else when it comes to it), but he's going to be a major component of our offense, make no mistake.

Holt played in one of the most prolific offenses, in the history of the game...and had a league MVP throwing to him. You can't possibly be serious with that comparison?
