Tavon Austin Sets All-Time NFL First

Of all the explosive playmakers in NFL history, only Tavon Austin has done this :

Not only did Austin average 52 yards per touch, he also became the first player in NFL history to have a punt-return touchdown of at least 95 yards and a receiving touchdown of at least 55 yards in the same game.

And I believe I just heard an announcer say Tavon Austin is only the 3rd NFL player in history to have 3 scoring plays of over 50 yards in the same game.

3rd player age 22 or younger - and the others are Gayle Sayers and Randy Moss.

It's looking like "breakout game" is an understatement.

Re: Tavon Austin Sets All-Time NFL First

For me, these types of 'statistical firsts' and such are, well, mild, almost meaningless.

"John Doe from the this or that team is the first in NFL history to run for 99 yards after drinking just 5 ounces of Lime flavor Gatorade in the first half."
One must take note: LIME Gatorade, not orange flavor! There's a difference. **Ahy...**

Still, the point is well taken -- or, at least the effort to make a point regarding a player's excellent performance during a game, or two; or after a five week span; during his rookie year, etc., etc.

I'm just glad Tavon Austin was able to again showcase his potential without some penalty ruing it for him. And I do believe he'll get better along with an improvement from the Rams offense. Terrific play by TA today.

Good, now maybe he'll have more trade value.

Speedy little devil! He gives a whole new meaning to turn-and-burn...perhaps that's what is the difference, putting TA in a position where he can catch the ball in space and turn on the jets

Granted, these aren't really records, so much as milestones. Any way you slice it, though, it was a phenomenal performance, and the stats just emphasize how rare it is. Flipper Anderson's record for all-purpose yardage isn't something meaningless, and coming within 22 yards of that is worth talking about. Good game for the rookie!

No doubt! And it is likely we'll see more of this in the near future. How great would it be to have TA break Flipper's record! Ramtastic.

Re: Tavon Austin Sets All-Time NFL First

If I'm Schotty, Austin's either in the slot, out wide, or in the backfield in a large majority of my packages from here on out. Austin's a game changer, but only when he's on the field. Today's just clarification that the elite skills he displayed at WV translate directly to the NFL. I know a vocal minority will brush this off as "only one game", but he proved a lot to me in 60 minutes. He made the entire Colts secondary look like Craig Dahl out there. Whoever does that is nothing short of a God in my book.

I'm starting to believe in the idea that his blocking shouldn't keep him off the field.

He's too electric to only use exclusively in the slot, in my opinion.

He made a case today that he can more than manage playing on the outside. At the very least, a safety has to account for him over the top. I honestly think defenses are hesitant to press him. I would imagine pressing a lighting quick guy that's like 5'8" would be pretty difficult. There's just not that much surface area to grab a hold of. And if he beats your press, he's in control. While slot will continue to be his natural position, I think it would be silly not to widen him out much more often.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I feel like before Sunday's game he rarely went out wide.

According to Pro Football Focus, 196 of Tavon's 234 pass routes (or 83.8%) have been run from the slot. Of players who have played at least 50% of their offenses snaps, only Brandon Gibson, Randall Cobb, Eddie Royal, Wes Welker, Santana Moss, and Dexter McCluster have a higher percentage.
