Tempers Flare Tuesday Morning, Saffold OK ..

    Posted >Tue, August 17, 2010 11:38
    by Nick Wagoner

    - The Rams went through perhaps their most spirited practice Tuesday morning. Or, as coach Steve Spagnuolo called it "festive."

    - There were three full fledged scuffles during the workout as DT Gary Gibson and G Hank Fraley engaged first. Then DE Chris Long and OT Jason Smith which led to a group fracas that ended with RB Steven Jackson and Gibson tangled up.

    - Nobody was hurt in the mix and all sides had made up and calmed down before even returning to the locker room. Spagnuolo said he likes the feistiness to a point but wanted to make sure it didn't carry over into the locker room. By all accounts, it didn't.

    - On the injury front, the Rams continue to get good news and bad news. The best news was the return to practice of LT Rodger Saffold. He suffered a back injury in yesterday's practice and went for X rays Monday night. Those X rays were negative and Saffold was in full pads with full participation Tuesday morning.

    - In more good news for the O-line, guard Jacob Bell did some work in team drills for the first time since his oblique injury. And, for the first time in this camp, the Rams had the five players they'd like to start lined up in team drills. From left, they had Saffold, Bell, J. Brown, Goldberg and J. Smith. Now, they hope that everyone can continue to progress without setbacks so as to build some chemistry before the regular season.

    - Also, cornerback Ron Bartell continued to do just about everything and told me after practice that he plans on playing against Cleveland on Saturday night. He's fired up to be healthy and ready to go and says he has a lot to prove this year.

    - On the downside, the Rams were without DE Victor Adeyanju (knee), DE George Selvie (lower leg) and safety Kevin Payne (knee). Those were all new additions to the injury list but all are considered day to day and should be fine in the coming days.

    - Gibson tweaked his knee in the practice but said afterward that he's fine and doesn't expect to miss any time.

    - On Selvie, who was a new addition to the list, he went to get an X ray on his lower leg. It has been bothering him for the past couple of weeks and the Rams wanted to have it checked to be sure he's OK. Word should came later on Selvie's status.

    - One highlight of the practice was the short yardage work for running back Chris Ogbonnaya running behind the top line. Ogbonnaya had one run in "live" drills where he busted through a tackle and found his way into the end zone. The play fired up RB coach Sylvester Croom so much that he ran over and slapped Ogbonnaya on the helmet.

    - The Rams are back to work tonight with their final two a day of training camp.

Glad to hear guys were a little grumpy about the way things went on Saturday. Was I the only one who noticed how thoroughly ticked off the team looked on the sideline through most of that game? Spags is stoking a little fire in the belly of this group, methinks.

Man, if that's how Selvie can play with a bad wheel, I think we really have unearthed a gem.

Glad saffold is ok. Dont like Jackson being involved in any kind of scuffle, he is just to important, but really what can you do to stop scuffles. Hope selvie is fine I look for him to be our new RE. I am really looking forward to a healthy Bartell.

Great to see there pumped and ready to kill people.... also great too see how we have no injuries right now, exactly what we need more players attacking each other .

I hope Bajema is cut because it dont look good between him and Long and gives the upper hand to Onobun.

I do not prefer for us to cut our best tight end to make room for a basketball player

First off, hes not our "best tight end". And second, if you knew anything about Fendi, you'd know his potential is Antonio Gates like, but hey looks like you'd be a great GM...

It's good that it didn't carry into the locker room. Thats all that matters.

As for the line, I'm glad we are getting our starters back. We really need them out there. As we saw last week. lol

I think the Gates comparison is a little premature.Potential alone doesn't justify why he would replace Bajema this early in his development. BB's solid vet blocking skills alone are likely to help the young OTs a lot & save Sam's rear a lot of abuse. And won't The Rams carry 3 active TEs like last year? I'd say the battle is between Fendi and Hooma-whatsit to stick with Fells and Bajema.

I know what you mean. He is the blocking specialist on the team. Although losing him I don't think we will lose much though I'd preferably have him stay. If we keep 3 where does the last one land? The PS? If so, i'm betting Fendi gets snatched real quick.

I play in a semi pro football team and we always see sparks fly. Its just natural. Every one wants to win. Every one wants to hit.

I'm not saying get rid of Fendi. I'm saying that we shouldn't be pushing one of our few good players out the door to make room for a completely unproven tight end who's caught all of 2 passes in his entire playing career. Get rid of Darcy Johnson or Daniel Fells instead.

DISAGREE! i'm glad SJ is in there getting fired up. he's the leader of the offense until Sam can take over and i think its critical that the OL feel his fire and be motivated by it. Scuffle's are fine. its when "brawl" becomes the adjective that I'll join you in disapproval.

AGREE! Saffold... whew. dislocated pinkies, bruises, and pulls are one thing... but injured backs are scary. i got one right now and i'll tell ya, it can really mess you up
