Re: And then ther were 53

Atogwe, Groce, Byrd and Fisk to not make the team?

Atogwe has been the starter at FS during camp, and will be unless something happens. Bartell may have been moved to FS but is no where near getting much playing time. The team went through a lot of trouble to get Fisk and Byrd, and it would be stupid of them to just dump them straight away. Groce i dont see going just because he has starting experience. He may be even be the fifth CB, but he was our best cover corner last year.

Re: And then ther were 53

I agree with your assessments tomahawk, except I would be inclined to replace Groce with McGarigle since with T. Faulk's injury we don't have a back-up MLB at this point. I just don't see much "upside" with Groce and would like to fill his spot on the roster with somebody who may develop. We seem to have enough candidates at CB IMO.

    WHAT SAY YE?

Re: And then ther were 53

Yes, I think you're right, RAMarkable. We have an ample stock of DBs as it is.

THawk247, I understand your position on Fisk; I actually like him and appreciate his potential at DT depth. Keep in mind that nuance of a number though, 53. Last year we had one very good DL veteran, in the roster, 13 yrs. in the NFL ...grrr, can't remember his name right now! Point is, he was suppose to add to the DT depth -- didn't make the team.

It's not an easy task to take names off the list, is it?

I don't see us keeping 9 LBs and McGarigle not being one of them. I agree with the omissions stated by tomahawk247 with the exception that RAMarkable made with Groce I would not be disappointed to see Groce go.

I think Alston is supposed to be playing at safety anyway. If McGarigle sticks, does that mean Goolsby is the odd man out?

Re: And then ther were 53

My conservative pre-preseason guess at the 53 man roster...

QB (3): Marc Bulger, Gus Frerotte, Ryan Fitzpatrick
RB (3): Steven Jackson, Tony Fisher, Moe Williams
FB (2): Paul Smith, Madison Hedgecock
WR (6): Torry Holt, Isaac Bruce, Kevin Curtis, Shaun McDonald, Dane Looker, Marques Hagans

Re: And then ther were 53

THawk, I think I'll give in on Fisk. And GoldFleece is probably right on Alston becoming a Safety.

Hmmm. I've totalled 51. Now if only I can find two more keepers.

Nick, you have Atogwe and DeGroce. Tempting, tempting.

I liked your assessment but I had a few questions about the OL. Can you tell me why you think Drew Stronjny will make it? I will be honest I know very little about him. Other then Drew who I know little about Turner would be the next weakest link out of the bunch. I could see possibly taking Palmer or Saipaia (At G if healthy) over Turner because of their potential. From what little I have seen of Turner I don't see him ever having the potential to start in the NFL. Palmer is very strong and might have the potential to start. Saipaia is very versatile on the OL however I think he has proven he needs to be at guard. Saipaia's biggest problem this off-season has been injuries.

Re: And then ther were 53

The minimum (by numbers) that we can get by with:

QB (3): Marc Bulger, Gus Frerotte, Ryan Fitzpatrick
RB (3): Steven Jackson, Tony Fisher, Moe Williams
    FB (1): Paul Smith
WR (5): Torry Holt, Isaac Bruce, Kevin Curtis, Shaun McDonald, Dane Looker
TE (3): Joe Klopfenstein, Dominique Byrd, Aaron Walker
OT (4): Orlando Pace, Alex Barron, Todd Steussie, Blaine Saipaia
OG (4): Adam Timmerman, Richie Incognito, Mark Setterstrom, Claude Terrell
OC (2): Andy McCollum, Larry Turner

DT (4): La'Roi Glover, Jimmy Kennedy, Claude Wroten, Jason Fisk
DE (4): Leonard Little, Tony Hargrove, Victor Adeyanju, Brandon Green
WLB (2): Pisa Tinoisamoa, Dexter Coakley
MLB (2): Will Witherspoon, Tim McGarigle
SLB (2): Brandon Chillar, Raonall Smith
CB (5): Jerametrius Butler, Fakhir Brown, Travis Fisher, Tye Hill, Ron Bartell
S (4): OJ Atogwe, Corey Chavous, Jon Alston, Jerome Carter

    K (1): Jeff Wilkins
    P (1): Matt Turk
    LS (1): Chris Massey
    ---------------
    Total: 51

Underlined players are the ones that are least certain to make the cut.

    On the Bubble:

PR/KR (1): Hagans/Pyatt - If Hagans performs even close to the same level as Pyatt he'll get the job on versatility and the less troublesome injury history
RB (1): Russell/Hedgecock- We've been hearing good things about Russell in camp, but I'd also be tempted to keep Hedgecock
DB: Dejuan Groce - I'd rather let Bartell be the emergency backup CB (and backup S) to free up the spot for Alston
QB: Dave Ragone - Battle for #3 QB is still wide open
TE: ? - Anyone who shows good blocking skills could be #3 TE

Edit: Moved Massey onto the probable roster count.

Well, I said it was a conservative guess, so as of now I'm banking on the guys who have been here and are more experienced (Turner) than guys like Palmer who does have great strength but is really on the fence at this point. I would expect Palmer to hit the practice squad, though he could make strides and impress. As for Stronjny, I put him on there more because I'm not convinced Saipaia is going to make it until he shows he's really back from injury. Blaine will likely take that slot if he does well and remains healthy over the next couple weeks.

Golden, I'm curious as to how or why you're placing Massey on the "Bubble"? Or I missed something in your player count post.

Since he began as our LS/FB, I've always heard and now believe that Chris Massey is one of the best long snappers in the NFL, very accurate and very consistent.

I would think he's a given to be part of the team. Again, just wondering.

Actually, I forgot to move him up. I'm not even sure if we have anyone else who has experience in that role.
