Re: Things that make you sick!
yikes...what could've been...
i'm under the impression that all of those picks were done by lovie smith and charles armey...i doubt martz nor zyggy had much input into the selections, other than the lack of objections to them...
let me know if i'm mistaken on this...

Could you imagine Little and Stroud togather. Also if Holt, Bruce, and Wayne were togather O dear God the things that could happen.

Re: Things that make you sick!
I feel your pain and I agree with the Lewis Stroud screw up, some of the other picks aren't as bad as they look. Archuleta played well before he got hurt so it's hard to say we should have gone after Clements. Pickett over Wayne I have no problem with, we needed DTs and as for Wayne his potential might have never been seen sitting behind Holt and Bruce. Even Polley played well for us, and he also played well in Baltimore last year, so even though Jenkins would have worked out better it's not like Polley was horrible.

Re: Things that make you sick!
I agree about Polley, of course Jenkins would have been a much much better pick, but Polley was never as bad in my opinion as a lot of people seemed to think.
I can't believe that draft, on the whole it is nothing short of inexcusable. We had 4, FOUR (!), picks among the first 42 and we didn't even really get one quality longterm starter out of it, a day that will live in infamy, not the best of memories :x

Re: Things that make you sick!
hindsight is a wonderful thing, truthfully, how many of you thought that was a good draft back then ? i did,i thought pickett was a reach and he turned out to be the best one,i think,so i think to sit here and say this person or that person made bad picks is wrong and kind of senseless at this point.

Re: Things that make you sick!
Just confirms how hard it is to recognize how a player will turn out as a pro.

Re: Things that make you sick!
The Rams would have been scolded at the time if they picked Stroud over Lewis. It could well have been the different coaching they recieved when they got to the pros or it could have been the effort they put forth (the only person who can predict that is the person themselves), but Lewis was the better talent at the time. So I don't really think that is a mistake by the Rams, they did what was right at the time.

Re: Things that make you sick!
It's a little disappointing in hindsight I agree. It's also one of the primary factors in answering the question "How the hell did it come to this?". Bad drafts kill a franchise quicker than anything else. A look at how the Rams squandered the plethora of picks that came as a result of the Dickerson trade would bear this out if you really needed to prove it. Gaston Green, Bill Hawkins, Cleveland Gary, Bern Brostek,Mike Schad, Donald Evans, Brian Smith, Frank Stams blah, blah,blah................
What happened later as a result was the 90's.
Not entirely the same of course, but there's a chord to be struck I think.
That said, I'm not entirely sure that it isn't also pertinent to mention that what happens to these kids fresh out of college isn't just as important as their draft position. I'm not convinced that Bill Kollar did the best job that he could have done with the raw material that he was given. And lets's face it he was given a lot of material. So it's down to how they are handled a lot of the time as well and I think we can say that the Rams haven't always been as good as they might have been in that respect either.
It's a complicated business, one that we've struggled to figure out the last few years.
For the record, I thought that Polley was okay...................

Re: Things that make you sick!
This is a great point. It's pretty hard to believe that the Rams drafted three first round defensive tackles and all three of them turned out to be disappointments simply because of their own merits. They all had something in common, and that was their line coach. Same goes for Hargrove, come to think of it.

Even though we had Arch at the time, this one makes me sad:

Re: Things that make you sick!
You can do a hindsight analysis like this with any team in the league.
Welcome to the St. Louis Rams!
