Thomas: Big Honors Could Be Coming Soon For Quinn

Big honors could be coming soon for Quinn

    10 hours ago • By Jim Thomas • jthomas@post-dispatch.com > 314-340-8197

This could be a huge weekend for Rams defensive end Robert Quinn.

Tonight, he’s expected to be named to the Pro Bowl, becoming the first Rams defensive player to make the NFL’s all-star game since defensive end Leonard Little and safety Aeneas Williams in 2003.

By late Sunday evening, at the conclusion of the regular season, he could be the NFL sack champion. He enters the weekend with a league-leading 18 sacks, a 1½-sack edge over Robert Mathis of Indianapolis.

If Quinn maintains his lead, he will be the first winner of the Deacon Jones Award, a new honor which goes to the NFL sack leader each season. It would be fitting considering the late, great Jones played for the Rams during his Hall of Fame career and invented the term “sack.”

Lastly, there’s the not-so-small matter of the NFL defensive player of the year award. When the Rams and Seattle kick off at 3:25 p.m. (St. Louis time) Sunday at CenturyLink Field, the contest will feature the two leading candidates for defensive player of the year: Quinn of the Rams and cornerback Richard Sherman of Seattle.

It makes for an interesting subplot in a game that Seattle needs in order to win the NFC West and clinch home-field advantage. For any undecided voters, the contest provides a prime opportunity to compare and contrast the league leader in sacks (Quinn) and the league leader in interceptions (Sherman).

The Rams have all the respect in the world for Sherman, but predictably, are offering zero support in terms of player of the year.

“Robert is playing at an elite level,” Rams defensive coordinator Tim Walton said. “He’s the best pass-rusher in the game. He gets chipped; gets doubled.

“He can beat ‘em with an edge rush. He can beat ‘em with an inside move. He’ll power-rush guys. Since Week 8 or 9, teams have been doubling him and trying to move away from him. And he still finds a way with his speed and tenacity to get to the quarterback.

“If you watch the tape last week (vs. Tampa Bay), it was unbelievable some of the plays that he made. Spinning out of the double-team, and his relentless effort to the ball. So in my opinion, he’s the best in the game.”

For the low-key Quinn, he’s trying to remove any thoughts of laurels and awards from his head.

“If you think about all that too much it’ll kind of stiffen you up,” he said. “It makes you too robotic out there because you’re trying to make all these plays. And it makes you over-think things. So you definitely put them out the window and go play.”

His response when asked about the possibility of winning the first Deacon Jones award typified his mindset.

“It’d be a great honor, of course, to bring the first ever one back home in honor of him,” Quinn said. “But let’s finish this year strong, and whatever happens let it happen.”

Quinn brings an impressive resume to the table as a player of the year candidate. Besides leading the league, his 18 sacks are a franchise record. He’s tied for the league lead in forced fumbles with seven, two of which have been returned for touchdowns. (One by Chris Long against Indianapolis, and one by Quinn himself the following week against Chicago.)

Quinn also has been credited with 33 quarterback hits and 34 QB pressures over the course of the season according to film review by Rams coaches. So he has spent a lot of time in the backfield.

“Right now, he’s on a whole ‘nother level when it comes to people trying to block him,” teammate William Hayes said. “The ultimate goal every week is to win. But he’s special. I think everything will fall into place if he just does what he’s got to do. He’s just got to play his game.”

Even so, Sherman has to be considered the frontrunner for defensive player of the year. For one, he’s playing on a 12-3 team, an elite team that gets plenty of exposure. Sherman is playing for the league’s top-ranked defense, and for a secondary that has a catchy nickname: The Legion of Boom.

But Quinn can serve notice with another strong showing against the Seahawks. He had three sacks against them on Oct. 28 in a Monday night game that even Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said “we were lucky to win.”

Seattle won 14-9 but was outplayed on both sides of the ball, particularly in the trenches. Dating back to Quinn’s rookie season, he has recorded at least one sack in his past four games against Seattle.

His three sacks in October came against backup left tackle Paul McQuistan. Starter Russell Okung missed that game with a toe injury, but will play Sunday. In fact, both starting tackles for the Seahawks were out for that game, but right tackle Breno Giacomini also is back for the rematch.

“Okung last year was a Pro Bowler.” Quinn said. “And you hear Will (Hayes) and Chris (Long) talking about Giacomini — he’s a good tackle. So it’s gonna be a little different for us ... different in the sense that we had backups playing the first time we faced ‘em.

“We’ve just got to go in there with the same mindset like we did the first game. And hopefully we’ll be dominant like we have been.”

Sucks that Mathis plays the Jags at home this week, so he will have an easier game. He had 3 sacks v them last game.

Hope Quinn wins it, and he will certainly have earned it when the last sacks come v a top D.

Robert Mathis has the favorable matchup also. He's going against Luke Joeckel's back-up, a guy named Cameron Bradfield or something. It's going to be a tough competition for Quinn.

We need a "catchy nickname" for our defense.

If the league can give sacks by "league review" to tighten things up, maybe they should look at the legitimate sacks Quinn has had removed by illegitimate roughing the passer penalties. I know he has had at least two erased from the books by roughing the passer penalties that were completely bogus.

Quinn should now have 20 official sacks by "league review".
