Thomas: Rams Bench Center Jason Brown

    Rams bench center Jason Brown

    BY JIM THOMAS
    Wednesday, November 9, 2011

Center Jason Brown's streak of 84 consecutive starts ends this Sunday in Cleveland, but not by design. Brown, a seventh-year pro in his third season with the Rams, has been benched. He will be replaced in the starting lineup by Tony Wragge in Sunday's noon kickoff (St. Louis time) at Cleveland Browns Stadium.

As a unit, the entire offensive line has struggled at times this season, particularly when it comes to pass blocking. But most of the problems with pass blocking have come at the tackle position, particularly the left tackle spot manned by Rodger Saffold who is struggling after a strong rookie season in 2010.

Brown has consistently graded out among the team's highest offensive linemen game-by-game this season, and graded out second best among Rams blockers in last week's 19-13 overtime loss against Arizona according to team sources. Among current NFL centers, only Kansas City's Casey Wiegman (167) and Baltimore's Matt Birk (88) have longer starting streaks that Brown, who was signed by the Rams as an unrestricted free-agent prior to the 2009 season.

Wragge, signed Sept. 5 following his release by San Francisco, will make his first start with the Rams. Wragge has appeared in six games this season, primarily on special teams.

As someone who was brought in to be the leader and foundation of this young line, Brown has failed in his duties. Extremely disappointing, but clearly the coaches aren't forced to play anyone based on their contract.

im confused i dont know which one is right

    A) Brown moving to guard and benching Jacob Bell
    B) We see Wraggle as a freak Center
    c) He is injured
    D) Spags has completely lost his mind and has decided to bench the highest paid center

This franchise is such a train wreck. All this juggling on the line...to hurry a hobbled Bradford back into the line of fire. You cant make it up.

Tony Wragge plays center? Last time I checked, I thought he was a guard...this should be interesting.

Not happy with Brown's performance since he's been here. It's about time he's benched.

Brown has consistently graded out among the team's highest offensive linemen game-by-game this season, and graded out second best among Rams blockers in last week's 19-13 overtime loss against Arizona according to team sources.

Don't understand if he has been graded second best , Don't get it ? maybe something off the field ? From Brown to the left side of the line has been very bad . Stafford side has had the most sacks on Bradford , None of the high priced vet or rookies are doing even a fair job shamful .

Mark my words Bradford will end up like mark B running for his life , and getting hurt all the time , Which in trun will make Bradford a avg QB and nothing more , Our team will ruin anothe good QB , Brown was brought in to lead the OL and protect the QB job failed .

Our best o-lineman this year has been Lance Kendricks.

The funny thing was on draft day, the so-called experts said he was strictly, a pass receiving TE.?

Don't quite understand this one. Is there something more to this decision than meets the eye? What gives?Although disappointing to a degree, Brown seems like the wrong scapegoat for the Rams' offensive line woes. Saffold has been much worse and Smith is only absolved from being benched because of injury.

Just the latest nugget of news from this train wreck of an organization.
