Thomas: Rams With Head Injuries Return To Practice

Rams with head injuries return to practice

Running back Zac Stacy, cornerback Trumaine Johnson and left guard Chris Williams aren’t in the clear yet, but the three starters took a big step forward by returning to practice Thursday at Rams Park. All three left last Sunday’s game against Chicago and each did not return because of a blow to the head and a possible concussion.

That meant they had to go through the NFL’s concussion protocol — a series of tests, observation, and physical exertion leading up to this weekend’s game at San Francisco.

“The protocol continues,” Rams coach Jeff Fisher said after Thursday’s practice. “We were able to get our three players that are going through the process with the concussions on the field. No contact but full speed, and that’s encouraging.”

Stacy, Johnson and Williams were listed as having limited participation in Thursday’s practice.

Barring any symptoms, the trio must undergo final neuro-psychological testing and if that comes out OK, they’ll be cleared to play against the *****.

    “Everything looks good,” Fisher said.

The ***** didn’t see Stacy when the teams met Sept. 26 at the Edward Jones Dome. (He played only one snap from scrimmage and didn’t touch the football.) Stacy was named the starter the following week, against Jacksonville, and has rushed for 624 yards and scored five touchdowns in seven games.

When asked what he saw of Stacy on tape, ***** coach Jim Harbaugh fell several steps shy of effusive in his reply.

“Very solid,” said Harbaugh, one of the NFL’s least cooperative head coaches when it comes to the weekly conference calls with opposing team coaches.

If for some reason Stacy can’t play Sunday, Benny Cunningham would start in his place, with Isaiah Pead and Daryl Richardson in reserve. Shelley Smith would start in place of Chris Williams at left guard. As for Johnson, who has been playing well lately, Brandon McGee would take his place. But McGee didn’t finish practice Thursday — he was listed as limited because of a foot injury.

    MORE ON INJURIES

Right guard Harvey Dahl, who has missed the last three games because of a knee injury, returned to practice Thursday and worked on a limited basis with the Rams’ scout team. Also limited was safety T.J. McDonald (shin).

Defensive end Eugene Sims (foot) was upgraded to full participation Thursday from limited status. Linebacker Will Witherspoon did not practice for the second day in a row because of a personal matter.

For San Francisco, CB Tarell Brown (ribs), OG Mike Iupati (knees), and DT Ray McDonald (ankle) — all starters — did not practice.

    MR. IRRELEVANT

Tight end Justice Cunningham, who by virtue of being the last player taken in the 2013 NFL draft was Mr. Irrelevant, was signed to the Rams’ practice squad. Cunningham replaced tight end Brad Smelley, who was with the Rams for only one day.

It was tough news obviously for Smelley, but the Rams liked Cunningham entering the draft so they moved quickly to sign him once he became available.

“I know during the draft, they showed the most interest of everybody,” Cunningham said after his first Rams practice Thursday.

The Rams didn’t have a pick after the fifth round after trading up for Stacy. Cunningham was taken in the seventh round, No. 254 overall, by Indianapolis. Cunningham had spent this season on the Colts’ practice squad but was promoted to their active roster last week and played fullback against Arizona in place of the injured Stanley Havili. He caught one pass for 4 yards.

Cunningham, 6 feet 3, 258 pounds, was released at the start of this week. The Colts wanted to re-sign him to their practice squad. But on the advice of his agent, he signed with the Rams, thinking it would be a better opportunity.

Cunningham didn’t arrive in St. Louis until 10 p.m. Wednesday, and he was hoping to hook up with fellow University of South Carolina product Jared Cook to have Thanksgiving dinner.

Hopefully this will mean Zak Stacy will play this sunday because the Rams will definitely need him. Only if he is completely healthy that is.

McGee injured? We sure better hope trumaine can play, especially with The Tree back in action for the whiners. It might be time to activate the fourth Pointer sister for this game.

    Ramming speed to all
