Even if it were just to cover his butt, the bottom line is, if you don't ask, you'll never know. Besides, what harm will it have done if he says no?

There is a dramatic difference in my mind between making the phone call and getting (with about 95% probability) the expected no, and making sure that you get three days of press about it. Its telling that the Rams didn't step right up and clarify that he'd be the D-backs coach. They let the story float a while first.

Now...why do I care? Because it suggests to me that they're still interested in playing the part of looking competent rather than actually being competent. I mean, if it had come out later that they asked, knew it was a long shot, and were turned down, then I'm not so cynical. Instead, we have three days of news cycle about something that won't happen and no actual movement in filling our coaching slots, while other teams are in fact filling those slots.

This is somewhat comical. To me, the best move the Rams could do is fire Linehan, hire Williams as HC and Saunders as OC. However, we are stuck with Linehan and his cronies for just one more year.

Hey, may not be a bad thing. We get back to back very high first and second round picks, a new coaching staff and 2009 is looking very promising.

    Already looking forward to 2009.
