Thomas: Rams say Holt is staying put

Rams say Holt is staying put
    By Jim Thomas
    ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
    Sunday, Mar. 09 2008

Once the question was posed, the Rams official laughed for a good 20 seconds, then told a reporter: "If that were the case, we might have to line you up at wide receiver."

Rumors swirl like March wind this time of year. But the Torry Holt trade rumors — to Philadelphia or Cincinnati, take your pick — are simply hot air, according to coach Scott Linehan. Linehan says the Rams aren't shopping their star wide receiver.

"There's no interest, no discussions about trading Torry Holt," Linehan said. "He's on our team, we want him on our team, and I hope he feels the same way."

Besides, it simply makes no sense to move Holt. The release of Isaac Bruce leaves Holt, Drew Bennett and Dante Hall as the Rams' top three wide receivers. The team needs to add another quality body at receiver, not subtract one.

Wide receiver isn't the only glaring area of need. The Rams lack a starting center and a starting right end, and could be looking for cornerback help as well. It would be the height of optimism to think that the Rams could address all of those needs in one draft.

"There are still holes (on the roster)," said Billy Devaney, the Rams' executive vice president of player personnel. "There's still areas that we have to address."

Trouble is, almost all of the options in free agency are gone. The first week of free agency is always a wild feeding frenzy of teams over-paying for a limited supply of talented players. That was especially true this year.

"There was more money, and there were fewer players, so they just flew off," Devaney said.

Almost all of what Devaney calls the "A" level and "B" level players are gone in free agency. There may still be a few more cap casualties between now and the draft. And there's always the possibility of trades. The Rams, for example, have asked about Philadelphia cornerback Lito Sheppard.

But the bulk of the free agency period has come and gone. If you blinked, you missed it.

"At this point, we're going to kind of shift gears and probably in the next couple weeks focus on the draft," Devaney said. "We'll see what positions pop open (in free agency or via trade). We will be looking at a lot of different places. But mostly now just focusing on the draft."

So far the Rams have added four players in free agency: kicker Josh Brown, offensive guard Jacob Bell, tight end Anthony Becht and guard-tackle Adam Goldberg. They are hoping to sign quarterback Trent Green and are close to re-signing backup offensive tackle Brandon Gorin.

In terms of subtractions, the Rams have released wide receiver Isaac Bruce, defensive end James Hall and backup quarterback Gus Frerotte. Longtime kicker Jeff Wilkins has retired. The Rams have yet to lose a player in free agency, but strongside linebacker Brandon Chillar has made trips to Arizona and Green Bay.

The re-signing of Goldberg and the addition of Becht add blocking depth.

"Goldberg obviously was someone we wanted back because of his versatility as a backup on the offensive line," Linehan said. "He also has a background with (new offensive line coach) Steve Loney from Minnesota, which helps."

Becht, an eight-year pro who spent the past three seasons with Tampa Bay, has agreed to terms on a two-year deal. He is a blocking specialist who takes over Aaron Walker's role as an on-line blocker in two tight end sets. Walker is an unrestricted free agent who won't return to St. Louis now that Becht is a Ram.

"He made quite an impression on us," Linehan said, referring to Becht's run blocking in Tampa Bay's 24-3 victory over the Rams last Sept. 23.

Re: Thomas: Rams say Holt is staying put

I read somewhere that Avenger heard a radio report that Holt is going to be traded to the baseball Cards....

Seriously, we have to look at this whole FA thing a different way. Holt won't be going anywhere. Chillar may be looking for more money than we think he's worth. Atogwe hasn't made the news, so I assume that means either a) no one is interested in him for the price, or b) he really doesn't want to leave, or c), a combination of both.
The only thing I see besides a possible draft day trade is maybe unloading some of our depth at TE (also known as dead weight) in a trade to a really pathetic team who needs help even more than we do...like Miami or Oakland. Who knows, maybe we could trade Byrd and a signed Tony Banks photo for a 6th round pick, or maybe a CB that is an underachiever with a lot of potential.

I'm not too worried about what our team will do this year. The Rams D was 'average' last year, by that I mean if we could have kept our opponents from gaining 25 yards a game on us, we would have been quite respectable. If Little and Hill would have been in all the games, then we might have been able to do that. Our offense improved by a factor of 4 when Al Saunders was hired, meaning we will likely score more consistently and more often this season. Will we pull off a repeat of '99? I very seriously doubt it, but I have a feeling we won't be picking in the top 15 in the '09 draft.

Holt had a bad season last year, but that is due to injury. I always considered Holt and Bruce to be the two best sideline 'toe-tappers' in the NFL, and Torry still demands a lot of respect on the field. I don't think anyone expected him to be back in full form last season, but with another year behind hime, a lot of work, and a new offensive scheme, he could be in for yet another 1300+ yard season....so why even think that the Rams might trade him?

Well it was obvious. Linehan said it exactly like I would've. We have one great receiver, and the other two are decent. Losing our best receiver would be a dumb move. We already lost Bruce, don't lose another star.

I have to wonder how Holt feels about Linehan. He has already had heated words with him on the sidelines and now Bruce is gone. Bruce was Holt's mentor. I imagine that Holt may not be very happy with the FO at this time, but he is too much of a professional to say anything.

So... we're sure now... he's not being traded to the Bengals...

    Whew!

I was worried there for a minute.

If that trade were for Chad Johnson, I would've had no problem with the trade. Johnson is faster and younger, which are the two things the Rams need most at receiver.

Perhaps, but given that the source of that rumor was ME, I don't think it was ever seriously considered.

Well I hope Torry doesn't read this stuff, because he certainly would be gone if it were up to me, but I would not swap 1st round picks. I'd rather add a 5th round pick or something along those lines to even the trade.

Can you send me one of those signed Tony Banks photos?
