The St. Louis Rams travel to San Francisco to face their
longtime archrivals, the *****, in their first road game
of the season. The last time the Rams traveled to Monster
Park, the ***** took a 28-25, season-opening victory on
Sept. 11, 2005. The Rams hosted the ***** on Dec. 24, 2005,
with the ***** also winning, 24-20. The last time the Rams
won at San Francisco was on Oct. 3, 2004, a 24-14 decision.
The history between the Rams and the ***** dates to 1950,
San Francisco's first year in the NFL. The Rams lead the
all-time series, 58-53-2. The franchises have met twice a
year since the series inception, including three meetings
in 1989, the third being in the NFC Championship Game.
The series, which began on Oct. 1, 1950, was the beginning
of some legendary battles in the series that has featured
many streaks. The Rams opened by winning five of the first
six games. In the 1951 and 1952 seasons, the teams played
in back-to-back weeks. From 1968-1980, the Rams won 22
times, losing just four, with one tie, with separate
winning streaks of nine and 10 games. From 1981 until the
first meeting in 1990, San Francisco won 13 of 20 meetings,
including the 1989 NFC Championship game won by the *****,
30-3. The ***** then won 17 consecutive games over the Rams
from 1990-98. The Rams ended the streak in 1999 en route to
sweeping the ***** for the first time since 1980. The Rams
are 10-4 in the past six seasons against San Francisco,
with season sweeps from 1999-2001, and 2004.
