    Thoughts on Tonight's Game

Again, I'm not one to base my life savings on preseason games. But some of the things I saw tonight worry me.

    Offensively...

-Wow, the first team offense looked confused out there. First of all, the offensive line. I think I could count on one hand the number of times I saw adequate blocking either for a pass or run play. We really miss Pace, and it doesn't look like anyone is really stepping up. All anyone has to do is blitz and the line folds like Swiss.

-Bulger looked bad. He was lucky to actually have time to throw most of the time, but some of his throws just looked off-target. He and Isaac couldn't hook up on the first drive (although I liked that 17-yard out later in the half), and he gunned that slant to Looker a bit too hard. He looked out of synch and rattled, understandably because of the pressure but still... and held onto the ball too long on some plays. Looked like he didn't even see Barber coming from midfield on that interception.

-Faulk showed a cutback here or there and looked quick, but didn't do much that I could see. With this line and the blocking we have, Jackson looks much better at this point. He can shed the first guy and gain a couple after that. Given what this line has showed us so far, we may be forced to depend on that.

-Chandler looked okay but not as sharp as he did against the Bears. Nearly got picked twice on two bad throws (one was probably penalty worthy on the Chiefs DB). Looks like he was suffering from some of the same O-line problems Bulger faced in the first half, but I don't think Chris was being blitzed as much, though.

-Kevin Curtis looks like he's answering McDonald's performance last game. He's had some nice grabs and has me optimistic about our depth at wide receiver.

-Just saw the line give up a sack on a three man rush, and not because Chandler was holding onto the ball too long. This is embarassing. SIGN PACE NOW!!!

-Smoker fumbled the snap. Ugh. Smoker's pass gets stolen by a KC defensive back. Double ugh. Smoker throws into double coverage and would have been intercepted had the DB come down in bounds. Ugh to the third power. On the bright side, I saw Smoker hit a number of guys... that were wide open. I guess that's better than whiffing on some.

    Defensively...

-We can't stop the run to save our life. It's that simple. I don't know what they have to do, but it seemed like our lineman couldn't get off their blocks, and I saw Tommy Polley being taken out of a play by Dante freakin' Hall. DANTE HALL!!! He weighs 100 pounds wet. No wonder Polley's been demoted.

-Our defensive line has had some problems tackling the quarterback. Little looked like he was in a practice mindset by whiffing on Trent Green early in the game. When Tyoka did get to the QB, he was called for a bogus penalty. Other than that, the D-line hasn't impressed me that much this game.

-I thought Lovie Smith left the Rams after 2003? It looks like we're running the same pass defense. Sit back in a zone and let them complete pass after pass hoping for a turnover. I lost count of the number of times I saw a Chiefs receiver grab a ball and no Ram was around him because their zone spot was a ways away.

-Travis Fisher broke something in his arm/wrist. Yay, preseason!! At least Garrett and Groce have been getting some experience. Looks like they'll need it this season. I wouldn't be opposed to trying to fit Aeneas back at corner if Jason Shivers is adequate covering half the field beside Arch.

-Gotta love watching Tom Knight get dragged for five yards on the back of Omar Easy. Great pick-up!!

-I think Brandon Chillar had a fairly good game, as good as one can have in this contest. It looked like he was making some nice tackles and was around the ball.

Hopefully all this gets cleared up in the upcoming weeks. I'm trying to take a "wait and see" approach since, again, this is the preseason. But still, it's hard to ignore something that bad.

    Re: Thoughts on Tonight's Game

Team played as bad as its coached!.......MM really shined again tonight! Someday some people are going to realize that he is not a very good Head coach! OC yes,HC nooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!! MB looked terrible.......and before some of you get on me about the Oline was playing well,my point exactly! They didnt play well for Kurt in game one last year! and he still played a hell of alot better than MB. ..............some of you knew it wouldn't be long before someone like me would post this now didn't you!.......We looked terrible on both sides of the ball!..............................Hope Mad Mike can turn this team around but,i have my doubts! Tex, MM is terrible as head coach! First concern in this years draft should have been the Oline........period............MB's going to need all the help he can get! We have just as many weapons today as we have had in the past! MM has not a clue on how not only to use them but, also to have a line that can protect them! Letting Kurt go will kill us IMPO. Oh by the way we have had plenty of weapons since our Superbowl win! MM just has probably too much responsabilty on his shoulders1.........its called being the head coach!!!!!!!!!.............................He's as they say.......a pretender not a contender!............................What i say he's a joke!!!!!!!!!

I guess it's too much to ask to have a discussion about today's Rams without bringing up Kurt Warner, huh?

This is a thread about tonight's game. Kurt Warner didn't play in tonight's game, so let's try to keep him out of the discussion.

    Some very good points Nick.

I also do not like to read too much into preseason games but that was an ugly display of Rams football. T. Fisher going down is a big blow. Im with you on that pass defense. Im so sick of those soft zones. The offensive line flat out stunk and its a wonder Bulger did not get killed.

Things need to improve and in a hurry or it could be a long season.

Please Nick don't go changing on us. You are the biggest Bulger supporter here. Go back to the drawing board and find something good to say.

The O line looked horrible as to be expected with No Pace and No Turley. We are going to miss Hanifan this year.

Bulger is much better behind a solid O line. He always gets that spooked, panicky, "deer in the headlights" look to me, when the Defense keeps coming for him. Chandler seemed more comfortable but I guess he was playing against the second team, and Smoker looked alright for a rookie.

Fisher injured...broken... :upset: What a drag.

    For a few positive notes.
It is just a preseason game
Vermeil and Chiefs would have lots of reasons to come in fired up.
I think we had all three timeouts left at the half.
Chandler to Curtis ... couple of nice throws and catches there.
Chandler had a nice fake, that allowed Jackson to get the only TD.

It was darn ugly, all and all.

I'm not changing anything. But since you asked... *thinks*... I do think he displayed pretty good pocket presense tonight. A number of times you saw the pocket begin to collapse on one side, but rather than dance around or roll out, he just stepped to the side and continued looking down field for a target. I was impressed by that. On that one play where he did roll out to the right side of the field and took a sack, the defender was coming from behind and was out of Bulger's line of vision. Last Marc saw, it looked like Tercero had him blocked.

I agree with your assessment that he's much better behind a solid O-line. When ranking the problems I see right now, I'm not even sure I'd put Bulger in the top five because I think if you fix that line, you'll hit two birds with one stone and fix most of the problems we saw tonight out of Marc as well. I just don't think he ever got comfortable or ever got into rhythm, and it bothered him the entire half. Get some protection in there and I think it gets much better. It bothered me how many times I saw a running back or fullback trying to block a defensive lineman.

Anyways, the Chiefs laying it on thick at Arrowhead isn't anything knew. I'm interested to see what the Rams can do at home against the Redskins in what looks to be a full-fledged practice run of the regular season.

I feel like we're just biding our time on defense, as if we're waiting until they make a mistake and we get a shot at a turnover instead of trying to stop them on every play. I couldn't believe the number of times the Chiefs first team hit wide open receivers because our linebackers or DBs were a few steps away trying to play this zone. It ain't gonna work unless you get some pressure in there, and even when we got pressure, we didn't execute. I about threw my dinner when Little didn't slam Green on that third down sack opportunity. Ugh.

That's good Nick, come back to the positive side. I thought we lost you to the dark side over a pre-season game. It is just pre-season guys, remember that.

It will be interesting to see what the skins can or can not do in 4 short days.

    Re: Thoughts on Tonight's Game

yeah, it was just a preseason game...and martz probably didn't anticipate the intensity of the chiefs 1st unit being so high because it seems he convinced the rams players that this was just a meaningless practice game...maybe this was what he meant by not having his players prepared for this game...but, this is a game of emotion and attitude. i didn't see much of that from the rams players in this game. sometimes being too business-like in your attitude douses the passion needed for playing great defense. none of the rams defensive players looked like they wanted to blow up the opponent. no wonder the chiefs 1st unit moved the ball like hot knife in butter...i don't know if the rams players, especially on the defensive side, can just turn on the switch at will if they're incapable of exhibiting even some of the attitude and passion that is characteristic of a good defensive unit...

    Re: Thoughts on Tonight's Game

It's a good thing this is only pre-season, but there looks to be a lot to worry about. The injury bug is a killer, especially losing Fisher. What more can go wrong?? I usually don't get too caught up in what happens in the first few pre-season games but we really need to see improvement, not regression. Injuries aside, both lines looked extremely tentative and pretty much got pushed around. We're going to need inspired play if we want to be ready for the regular season.

The good news is Jackson looked effective, as did Little and Williams for the most part, along with the reciever corps. I feel bad for Bulger because he deserves a chance to prove himself behind a healthy offense but that's just not going to happen, so he really needs to step it up.

The rest of the pre-season now becomes a little more critical in the preparation of this team as we look to pull things together.

    1) ClanRam ............. its a pre season game. The Rams don't get up for them, never have.

    2) ClanRam ............ its the SECOND pre season game, lets get the kinks ironed out of our team.

    3) ClanRam ............. not much the Rams or Martz can do when every team we play treats a pre season like a frigging super bopwl.

    4) Saying that ........... man our O line and D line stunk.

Aside from the line play on both sides of the ball, the pass coverage along with the linebacking, quarterback, rout running, special teams and game preperation I think we looked pretty good. We just need to improve in those areas to be a real contender.

Unhappy Re: Thoughts on Tonight's Game

WOW!! What a performance by the soon to be "best quarterback in the history of the Rams!! That "Genius" Mike Martz - what an amazing offensive performance!!

My Opinion - Get used to it Ram fans, I see a 6 win season. We are headed to mediocrity because : we have a "idiot savant" as a coach and a front office which shows no loyalty to its quarterbacks. We've only had 2 real good ones since I've been a Ram (1976) and we ran both of them away! (Vince and Kurt). This lack of loyalty is recognized by other players in the NFL, which is why we get no significant free agents. No one plays for Martz. He has inherited a great team and led them to ruin!!! This team was never about Falk, Bruce or Holt. We won because we had the best qb to ever play - and we ruined it!!

Stand up and take a bow all you traitors who were happy to see Warner go. Enjoy your new qb that no team in the NFL wanted! Enjoy your retarded coach! Enjoy your 6 win season! In 2 years we will have the first pick in the draft and Martz will be only a memory. Rebuilding here we come!

    Re: Thoughts on Tonight's Game

Why does Bulger need a better line to prove himself? Shouldn't he learn to play through it like other QBs do?

And to take some of the blame away from Bulger: Shouldn't Martz be finding ways to take advantage of the other teams excessive blitzing? I mean; that's his job!! If he can do that, the other teams will cut back on the constant blitzing, and maybe Bulger can get rid of that deer-in-the-headlights look.

    Re: Thoughts on Tonight's Game

I know it's preseason. However, the D-line is in tough shape. All those OCs watching the game can't wait to play the Lambs. Same story as with..... "gone to Carolina in my mind..." OOOUUUCCCHHHH!

Bulger was inept. He will never be the Man.....perhaps this assessment is premature, considering the O-line looked like a finely aged slab of swiss cheese. But, I saw not one thing positive for Bulger.

On the bright side, I saw a few special team tackles that well, were "special".

Jackson was impressive - if he only had a few blockers.

I the the WORDS of MM ... "we can fix that....."

Well - he had better start.
