    thursday deadline for franchise tag-pickett

thursday is the deadline for teams to designate players with the franchise or transition tag. this has a bearing on the rams and ryan pickett. should be interesting to see what we do. Reading tea leaves, i believe that the two sides are talking trying to get to a deal before the deadline. its good news that we havent tagged him yet and better news that all appears quiet.

If we don't use it on pickett, do you seeing us using on Arch or not at all?

i dont see us tagging arch. just my opinion.
i cant see how we would possibly tie up that much cap on arch, ie top dollar for the position, he just isnt that good. does anyone believe arch is one of the top 3 safeties in the nfl? I dont see any way to make that argument.

pickett in my mind is a solid player, but we can pick up a solid player in FA for less then the price of a franchise tag, so if it comes down to that then let him go. id prefer him to stay though...

why the seahawks still envy the rams:tongue:

I think getting Pickett back is a priority. He really came on strong this year and was robbed of a pro bowl appearance. He really came out of no where this year on a disappointing defensive line and should get what he deserves. I'm not saying we go as far as overpaying him, but tag him atleast.

I heard on ESPN radio that since the NFL hasn't been able to extend the bargaining agreement (hense there will be no cap ceiling) that teams will be afraid to make any significant moves in the free agency market or franchise tag without knowing where the cap will be in the future.

I'm sure the Rams are working on a long term deal with Pickett cause they sure don't want to tie all that money up with using the Tag!!!with FA round the corner!!

If we can't work out a long deal right away apply the franchise tag and then work on it during the season.

Remember the risks on the tag. Cap number aside, the player still has to report to camp and sign the tender. This is often very difficult as it was with pace and can often lead to the player being out of shape, which in picketts case, given his already noted girth, could be a real problem. In addition, no reason to believe he will show up for off season workouts etc. You cant sign a long term deal with the guy until after july. I am not saying we shouldnt do it, only cautioning that the tag has its perils.

The tag for safties is really cheap. Something like 3-4 million...

Cheap compared to safeties that are tag-worthy. However, unless his back is 100%, I wouldn't offer Arch more than 2 per year.

the franchise tag is about 4 million. I am with the big bison on this, 2 million is the max i would go and that is pushing it. Bottom line to me is his back cant be healthy because even if it is ok today it is highly likely to reoccur. I have never in my life heard of a football player with a back problem that improves physically over time.

I do believe he is good but everyone thinks he is great because hes had his great moments.

Re: thursday deadline for franchise tag-pickett

I really don't think Arch ought to command top dollar at this point. The most recent base salary figures for safety I've seen are Ed Reed at $2.15 million and wanting more and John Lynch at $2.9. Darren Sharper's deal last year was 4 years for $10 million (avg. $2.5 mill/yr.) with 4 million bonus. I think Polamalu is still playing on a 5 year $8.275 million deal (avg. $1.655/yr.) from 2003. After Darius got franchised, he signed a 3 year extension that still gave him $4.968 million in the first year.

Out of all those guys, I see Archuleta being closest to Lynch--a hard-hitter who isn't great in coverage and has injury issues, only Archuleta's best years aren't as good as Lynch's best years and there's a gap in youth/experience...and I thought Denver overpaid Lynch at the time anyway.

i agree. The thing that worries me most (correct me if im wrong) but i read an article in SI that said he forgoed surgury to try and rehab it naturally. That sounds a tad unreliable to me....
And it looked like such a good day...
