Training Camp Will Be A Battle For 19 Spots

Right now, I count 34 players who (barring trade or major injury) will ABSOLUTELY make the 53 man opening day roster. They are:

    QB (2): Bulger, Boller
    RB (1): Jackson
    FB (1): Karney
    WR (3): Avery, Burton, Robinson
OL (6): Smith, Incognito, Bell, Brown, Greco, Barron
    TE (2): McMichael, Bajema
DL (6): Little, Long, Ryan, Carriker, Adeyanju, Scott
LB (4): Witherspoon, Laurinaitis, Draft, Tinoisamoa
DB (6): Bartell, Hill, King, Fletcher, Atogwe, Butler
    ST: (3): Jones, Brown, Massey

That leaves 19 spots on the opening day roster up for grabs.

There are certainly some "front-runners," including Brian Leonard, Derek Stanley, Brooks Foster, Adam Goldberg, James Hall, Quinton Culberson, David Vobora and Jonathan Wade. Others who could be retained would be Dane Looker and Jason Craft.

I also would not count out the possibility of the Rams adding a couple of vets before training camp. I have my eye on Amani Toomer (if he's in good shape), Larry Foote and Travis Laboy. There will likely be others who will become available in the next few weeks.

    Could be an interesting Summer.

No backup safeties? Is Todd Johnson still on the team?

Of course there will be backup safeties. I just don't think any of the current backup safeties (Johnson, Bassey) are GUARANTEED to make the roster.

I understand. I guess I was surprised Johnson was not named in your list of "front runners."

With all due respect Av, I think Todd Johnson is absolutely on the roster. Experience at safety, and more importantly, a strong special teams player and respected locker room presence ...

I think this is a make or break year for "G" J. Bell. I thought Greco played better than Bell and cost's millions less.

Any thought of Rams trading Pisa for a player to be named later.

I know the Rams have to keep certain players because of a cap hit , but every position should be up for grabs even ofted injured RB S. Jackson. Hopefully he's in shape during season and not sucking OXYGEN after his 3rd run from scrimage.

That's true. This year our whole momentum and offense runs behind the offensive line. If they show up to play and dont have TOO MANY injuries, we can have a very good season.

Steven Jackson is the best player on our team bar none. I agree that he should have to work as much as anybody, but suggesting that it is even possible for him not to make the 54 man roster is lunacy. I have stood behind every move the front office has made so far, but if they would cut S-Jax there would be a mutiny. I think an angry mob with torches and pitch forks outside Ram park may be appropriate...

Well, 19 open spots became 20 when Pisa was sent packing, but I'd say otherwise my initial list was on target.

My final 20 (absent a late FA signing or trade):

    QB: Null
    RB: Gado, Darby
    WR: Curry, Carter, Stanley
    TE: Fells
    OL: Goldberg, Setterstrom
    DE: Ah You, Moore
    DT:Thomas, Gibson
    LB: Grant, Vobora, Chamberlain
    CB: Wade, Q.Butler
    S: Johnson, Dahl

Can't disagree with your description of him, but I don't think he's guaranteed a roster spot by virtue of those attributes. I would think Spags hopes one of the younger players steps up and wins his spot. Todd is a liability in coverage due to his lack of speed. We'll see soon enough .. Spags is trying to find playmakers, and Johnson isn't going to get any better.

I think you forgot to put James Hall on the initial list of 34, so he'd take Ah You's spot.

You're right. Hall should be there. Not sure that means Ah You is out, though. He's had a pretty good preseason.

Yep he has. I've been surprised at how well he's been doing actually. I'm pretty sure this guy is going to make the cut.
