    TSN Rams Report

    Rams Team Report

The addition of TE Randy McMichael gives the Rams five receivers on the roster who caught 46 or more passes last season. The pieces are in place for a potent offense, with WRs Torry Holt, Isaac Bruce and free-agent pickup Drew Bennett; McMichael at TE; RB Steven Jackson coming out of the backfield; and QB Marc Bulger coming off a career year. Dating back to the days of the "Greatest Show on Turf," the Rams also have been a selfless team. There have been few complaints about getting the ball. But with such an array of weapons, coach Scott Linehan and offensive coordinator Greg Olson will have to be creative to keep everyone involved. But a solid No. 2 running back still is a necessity, and even with the re-signing of veteran OL Todd Steussie, more depth is needed on the offensive line.. . .

Steussie played surprisingly well last season; his return provides peace of mind in case something happens to starting tackles Orlando Pace and Alex Barron. Steussie also can fill in at guard. Free-agent pickups RB Travis Minor (Miami) and S Todd Johnson (Chicago) will provide depth and help on special teams. Minor will be the No. 3 or 4 running back, but his biggest value will be as a core special teams player. Johnson will compete with Jerome Carter for the No. 3 safety spot. He's a big hitter with some starting experience at strong safety and also excels on special teams. Meanwhile, the addition of street free agent P B.J. Sander provides a developmental player who at least will provide a camp leg but could compete for the job.

SCOUTING REPORT:McMichael is known for his pass-catching prowess. It's hard to argue with his production -- he has averaged 57 catches a year during his five NFL seasons. McMichael is speedy enough to get downfield but is best at short and intermediate routes. He will add another dimension to the Rams' red zone offense. But McMichael is more than a pass catcher. Despite his average size for a tight end (6-3, 255), McMichael is an every-down player who will provide a level of blocking the Rams didn't have last season from either Joe Klopfenstein or Aaron Walker. McMichael is best as an on-line blocker but is also adept at blitz pickup in the backfield in an H-back role. His arrival takes some of the pressure off Klopfenstein, who struggled at times blocking on the line as a rookie.

I'm not sold on his blocking abilities, everyone says that that's his main flaw.
