Unlike pal Petrino, Linehan plans to finish what he started

By Bill Coats 12/13/2007 4:03 pm

Scott Linehan canít see himself ever bolting his team in mid-stream, no matter how difficult things might be.

ďIf you preach finishing what you start, you have to follow up with that,Ē Linehan said. ďThat would be my method. I would obviously have to prove that over time. . . . The easiest time to walk away is when things are down, and I think thatís when you have to step up and really be a stand-up person. Iím talking about our players, assistant coaches and people who work for the Rams.Ē

Linehanís longtime friend, Bobby Petrino, abruptly left the Falcons, 3-10 and in last place in the NFC South, earlier this week to take the head-coaching job at the University of Arkansas. Petrino didnít address the Atlanta players, instead leaving a note in their lockers.

Linehan, whose team also is 3-10 and resides in the NFC West cellar, pointed out that bad times often precede an upturn in fortunes.

ďThere are going to be better times down the road,Ē he said. ďI was telling the team the other day, something good had to happen, some kind of unifying factor had to happen, with Coach (Dick) Vermeil and the í99 team. They won nine games in two seasons (5-11 in 1997, 4-12 in í98); the next year they were in the Super Bowl and won it. You stick with things. You go through tough times (but) good things are ahead.Ē

    Notes & quotes:

    >>QB Marc Bulger took about 90 percent of the snaps with the first team Thursday. If he makes it through Fridayís practice OK, heíll start Sunday vs. the Packers.

    >>With two more TD passes, Bulger will have 103 and move by Kurt Warner for the fourth spot on the franchiseís career list.

    >>Barring a late setback, the Rams figure to start the same five on the offensive line for the third game in a row. Thatís happened only once previously in this injury-filled season.

    All for now. . .

Petrino doesn't have the "SPINE" to face the team instead leaves a note in their lockers. What a weasel!!!! He's a football coach??? Might want to look into coaching badminton!
