UPDATED--Rams trade Barron to Cowboys for LB Carpenter

    Credit to STL Post Dispatch:

Alex Barron in all likelihood has played his last game as a Ram. The Rams are close to sending Barron to Dallas for linebacker Bobby Carpenter, according to NFL sources.

Barron is amenable to the trade and is looking forward to a fresh start with a high-profile playoff-caliber team. The trade cannot be made official until Barron signs his one-year tender with the Rams as a restricted free agent.

In addition, both Barron and Carpenter must pass physical exams, which is standard procedure for all trades. As of early Thursday evening, however, the Rams were still working out some details.

One detail the Rams could be negotiating is a one-time playing incentive of $1.9 million that Carpenter could receive this year. It looks like he would be the Rams' starting weakside linebacker in a trade, in which case the incentive would activate easily if Carpenter stays healthy.

Carpenter also is due to earn a base salary of $1.19 million this year, the last year of his original rookie contract. Drafted 18th overall in 2006 out of Ohio State, Carpenter has been a disappointment with the Cowboys.

In four seasons with the Cowboys, he has started only one regular-season and one playoff game. Despite his size — 6-feet-2 and 250 pounds — Carpenter has a reputation for not being a physical player. But he runs well and was effective last season as a nickel linebacker in passing situations.

Carpenter finished with career highs of 46 tackles and two sacks in '09. Although he was a backup inside linebacker in the Cowboys' 3-4 scheme, he probably is best suited to playing weakside linebacker for a 4-3 team such as the Rams.

Should the trade go through, the Rams could have an all-Ohio State unit of starting linebackers with Carpenter on the weak side, off-season pickup Na'il Diggs on the strong side, and James Laurinaitis in the middle.

Barron has been dangled as trade bait during the offseason by the Rams. Even though he was tendered at a first-round level ($2.621 million) as a restricted free agent, the Rams sought only second-round compensation. In addition, the team was willing to take a third-round draft pick if Barron got an offer from another team.

But the April 15 deadline for restricted free agent offer sheets came and went without an offer for Barron. A week later, when the Rams used their pick at the top of the second round, No. 33 overall, for Indiana University offensive tackle Rodger Saffold, it appeared that Barron's days with the Rams would be numbered.

Chosen No. 19 overall in the 2005 draft by the Rams out of Florida State, Barron has played in 76 NFL games, including 74 starts. In Dallas, Barron probably would be the Cowboys' swing tackle at the outset, backing up both the left and right tackle spots.

Minus Barron, the Rams plan to start second-year man Jason Smith at left tackle and Saffold on the right to protect No. 1 overall pick Sam Bradford at quarterback.

Re: RUMOR--Rams trading Barron to Cowboys for LB Carpenter

    I like it.

I'm sick and tired of watching Barron false start again and again while waiting for him to develop. 5 years must be more than enough of this!

I don't know if Carpenter is going to do much here. It should be a good opportunity for him, it's not like we're overflowing with great LB talent. He could be a nice upgrade over what we have now I think. It'll be interesting to follow him, he should have a good shot at starting here.

I thought we were very likely to simply release Barron and get nothing so I think this deal is a very good example of getting something for nothing.

Good deal. Now get Barron out of here.

I don't love Carpenter, but I think the trade is good. It's probably the right move. We get a starter to replace, what is now, a backup.

Carpenter was a 1st rd pick in the same class/school as AJ Hawk. They were a duo the caused damage to opponents. I think Spags will use his defensive experience and turn Carpenter into one of the best linebackers in the NFL. Spags did that will less talent on the Giants.

We trade a starter (Barron is currently our better tackle on the roster) for a backup (Carpenter is not a starter for the cow boys).
I would like to have a draft pick (low round) plus Carpenter to deal Barron, LT is a premier position unlike OLB.

    I agree with Rob

Im quite excited about this trade. Whats worth noting is that Carpenter definately doesnt fit the Cowboys 3-4 scheme. He might make an excellent 4-3 OLB, which is what we're hoping for. The guy hasnt had a chance to play in an NFL 4-3 scheme, which he played in in college. I think he will become a solid (if not more) player in our scheme

    Diggs / Laurinaitis / Carpenter

    better than last year anyway

Re: RUMOR--Rams trading Barron to Cowboys for LB Carpenter

I'm glad to see some positive comments about this trade.

When our site was experiencing its techincal difficulties, I went over to some other Rams sites and there was a lot of the typical "everything the Front Office does is wrong" type posts.

I think the trade makes sense. Carpenter should, as others pointed out, fit much better in a 4-3 defense. Barron would have had value this year, but I can't imagine the Rams would re-sign in him in 2011 when he
    becomes a UFA.

Relying on a rookie and a second year player at OT is risky, but the Rams need to take a few calculated risks at this point.

As i said in the other post on this subject, i feel Saffold at RT and Carpenter at WLB is better than Barron at RT and Vobora at WLB.

It also gives Vobora more of a shot at competing for the SLB position, where i think he might be a better fit

Most fans dont like Carpenter, but a few think he could be useful in the right situation ?.
What worries me is if the Rams get OL injuries early on in the season.

Re: RUMOR--Rams trading Barron to Cowboys for LB Carpenter

I must say, I'm liking the all OSU LB squad we're putting together in St. Louis. Carpenter was definitely a solid player in school, but I haven't had the chance to watch him play in the pros. These seemingly rather bizarre trades have been working out for us though, so I trust the front office made a good decision.

With 4 alum at LB now, it's a great day to be Buckeye and Rams fan!

Re: RUMOR--Rams trading Barron to Cowboys for LB Carpenter

Her are some interesting comments from a Cowboys beat writer:

Bobby Carpenter can be a productive player

    Todd Archer / Reporter

I will be killed for this, but I think Bobby Carpenter can be an effective player in the NFL.
If he is traded to St. Louis, then he would go to a much better fit as a weakside outside linebacker in a 4-3 scheme because he will be protected more and allowed to use his speed. Carpenter did a good job last year in the nickel defense, covering tight ends and backs and I don't think the Cowboys really missed Kevin Burnett, his predecessor in that role, at all in 2009.
Carpenter has not been able to overcome perceptions. When a teammate was heard calling him Barbie and owner and GM Jerry Jones said he lacked the physicality necessary in HBO's "Hard Knocks," the tags stuck. In 2007, the coaches could not put aside a poor preseason performance at Minnesota and kept him limited solely to a special teams' role.
If Carpenter weren't a first-round pick, then he would be viewed differently. He didn't ask to be taken with the 18th pick of the 2006 draft. Bill Parcells wanted him and the Cowboys took him. It just hasn't worked out the way either side wanted.
He never complained publicly about the lack of playing time or opportunity. He continued to work hard and he made some plays last year that helped the Cowboys win games that some of you will never admit.
A new environment would serve him well and allow him to become an every-down contributor.

Re: RUMOR--Rams trading Barron to Cowboys for LB Carpenter

If we don't make the trade, Barron is gone after 2010. Zero chance he gets resigned. There is the possibility that Carpenter could shine under Spags with the move to his more natural 4-3 OLB. Since the Rams are building for 2011/12 and NOT 2010, this is a good move. It's very similar to trading Witherspoon. We trade away a guy who doesn't fit this team for a guy / pick who MIGHT fit this team.

Honestly, I'm fine with this deal. Barron hasn't won me over with his consistent inconsistency and concentration issues, and it's clear the Rams are open to life without him. Getting a guy in Carpenter, whom I agree is a better fit in a 4-3 scheme, would be a nice pick-up. Worst case scenario, he competes for a starting job in a thin group of OLBs on this team.

I was looking for the (like) button on this trade. But facebook hasn't taken over our site yet lol. I have to say this is a good trade for the Rams. Considering we didn't get anything for Carriker, getting a former 1st rounder for Barron is huge. Also I like the fact that Parcells selected him. I have some faith in his selection criteria.

Back up LB for starting LT doesnt sound fair, they need to sweeten the deal, maybe a future #5th then again Carps might flourish in the 4-3, he was way to small to play MLB in the Cowboys 3-4. I'm lukewarm till the Cowboys weeten the deal.
