Victory puts the Rams at 11th in draft order

    By Jim Thomas
    ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
    Monday, Jan. 02 2006

IRVING, TEXAS As a result of Sunday's victory over Dallas, the
Rams will have the No. 11 overall selection in the NFL draft in April. It's the
highest the Rams have picked in the draft since the 1999 season, when the club
selected wide receiver Torry Holt at No. 6 overall.

At 6-10, the Rams finished in a four-way tie for the 11th-worst record in the
league with Baltimore, Cleveland and Philadelphia. But the Rams get the No. 11
pick ahead of those clubs because they have the weakest strength of schedule of
    the group.

Had the Rams lost Sunday's season finale to the Cowboys, it would have moved
them up three draft spots, to the eighth pick overall ahead of the Ravens,
    Browns and Eagles.

    Schedule is set

Sunday's victory also means the Rams finished second in the NFC West this
season, ahead of rival Arizona (5-11). The second-place finish means the club
will play host to Washington, which finished second in the NFC East, and play
at Carolina (second in the NFC South) next season.

The rest of the 2006 schedule is set by formula, with the Rams playing the
entire NFC North and the entire NFC South, in addition to their home-and-home
series in the NFC West. Here are the Rams' 16 opponents for 2006:

Home: Arizona, San Francisco, Seattle, Chicago, Detroit, Denver,
    Kansas City and Washington.

Away: Arizona, San Francisco, Seattle, Green Bay, Minnesota,
    Oakland, San Diego and Carolina.

The dates and times for the 2006 schedule won't be released until the spring.

    Rare miss for Wilkins

Jeff Wilkins' missed field-goal attempt midway through the second quarter
practically qualified as man-bites-dog news. For one, it was only Wilkins'
third miss of the season. He had made 26 of 28 before careening a 27-yard
attempt off the left upright with 7 minutes left in the first half. The miss
snapped a streak of 16 field goals made for Wilkins.

His only previous misses this season were against New Orleans on Oct. 23 and
the New York Giants on Oct. 2, both from 48 yards.

Over the course of his 12 NFL seasons, Wilkins had made 88 of 90 attempts from
20-29 yards until Sunday. His last miss from inside 30 yards took place in 1998
    against the New York Jets.

In the third quarter, Wilkins was short on a 53-yarder.

    S. Jackson sits

Steven Jackson's first full year as an NFL starter ended after 15 games.
Jackson, the second-year running back from Oregon State, was a pregame scratch
Sunday because of a hip pointer. So Jackson's 2005 season ended with 1,046
    yards rushing and 10 touchdowns.

Marshall Faulk started in Jackson's place, with Aveion Cason and Arlen Harris
    also filling in.

Joining Jackson on the pre-game inactive list were DE Clifford Dukes, DT Brian
Howard, DT Jimmy Kennedy, OG Ben Noll, OT Matt Morgan and TE Aaron Walker.

    Injury update

Defensive tackle Ryan Pickett suffered what was described as a strained
shoulder late in the first quarter. Jeremy Calahan, an undrafted rookie from
Rice, saw his first NFL action in place of Pickett, but Pickett later returned.

Calahan's debut ended midway through the third quarter when he suffered a
    sprained left knee.
