Wagoner: New Loook For Rams' Run Game?

New look for Rams' run game?

    October, 2, 2013
    Oct 2
    By Nick Wagoner | ESPN.com

EARTH CITY, Mo. -- Asked about his team's struggling run game last Friday, St. Louis Rams coach Jeff Fisher indicated that changes might be in the offing.

Nothing appears set in stone as to what those changes might be but (former?) starter Daryl Richardson offered a clue as to what one of those alterations might be, this time via Twitter.

Tuesday night, Richardson had the following exchange with a fan on the social media website.

    Saeb Haidar @saebhaidar
    @DRICH_26 You still starting?

    Daryl Richardson ✔ @DRICH_26
    @saebhaidar not this week man

    8:19 PM - 1 Oct 2013

That the Rams could look in a different direction comes as little surprise given Richardson's struggles in the early going. Plagued by a foot injury, Richardson hasn't had the burst or confidence he ran with for most of his rookie season. Although he leads the team in rushing with 114 yards, he's averaging just 2.7 yards per carry.

Isaiah Pead, Zac Stacy and Benny Cunningham are possibilities to be more involved this week if indeed Richardson's role is reduced. Pead was inactive last week while Cunningham has been getting opportunities the past few weeks. Stacy was back on the active list against the Niners but played just one snap. Since he's the back that has had the fewest opportunities (among those who've had them), perhaps this week he gets a bit of an extended look.

Regardless of who gets the carries, the Rams must find a way to get production against Jacksonville's 32nd ranked run defense.

I wonder if Fisher will even announce the starter prior to the game? I hope so as I'm desperate for a RB on one of my fantasy teams this week.

Re: Wagoner: New Loook For Rams' Run Game?

Fisher said on his show if you can call it that.. when asked what we will look like and he said just watch the game. After watching his presser, I got the feeling DRich had lost his job as a starter. With Pead in the Dog house, not confirmed. We may see Stacy and Cunningham this week. I would hope it's Stacy starting and Pead as the change of pace guy.

DRich has not looked good since he got hurt, how can the Rams not see that?

Same thing with Finnegan. The Rams have apparently not seen a lot of things this year.

Re: Wagoner: New Loook For Rams' Run Game?

Why does this offense even have a "starting" RB? Which is to say, why should this offense.....built for an aerial attack......have a "workhorse" RB? Where's the committee?

Several teams are very successful with a RB-by-committee approach. For the following teams, their leading RB gets this percentage of total carries:

    Saints - 35%
    Broncos - 42%
    Packers - 52%
    Patriots - 44%

...yet the Rams are pushing D-Rich for 65% of the RB carries.

He's not a workhorse. Why are they trying to make him one?

Here is the new look I am hopeful for:

    Rams run effectively
    Rams tackle
    Rams catch passes
Rams stop opponent on 3rd and forever
Rams score more points then opponent.

    Never much for the details........

    Agreed

How many times have they run DRich between the tackles?

I'm waiting to hear the Rams signed the sandwich maker back. Ok that's a reach but we only have one bigger back and that's Stacy.

Mike you can add Chris Long to that list as far as I'm concerned, He had a leg injury which never was fully disclosed and he has a 1/2 sack and 10 tackles in four games. Between Cort and Long their production has fallen off a cliff. But they both play a hell of a game of Smack Cam

Re: Wagoner: New Loook For Rams' Run Game?

Rambos, you hit the nail on the head. WHY, WHY are we running DRich between the tackles when he's not equipped with size or skills to do that. He was best when he ran outside and had blocking ahead of him. Much of the problem is our offensive line, but we've discussed that at length in other threads. In all honesty I wish we had a FB like Brit Miller again.

    Go Rams!

I expect more stretch plays from our halfbacks if we want to at least get a running game going. Pead excelled at those in college. If we want to pound down the middle, leave that up to Stacy.

I'd say Zac Stacy saw DSproles' successful performance on MNF, yes?

Hey, Stacy is BIGGER than Sproles!

The Rams built for aeriel attack...really? I thought they picked up a passing game to compliment their running game. If this pass off season was to build an arial bombardment team, they failed miserably considering the level of talent that was on the market. If nothing Else the 49whinners/Seagulls went that rout--just look who found their way on those teams roasters. Honestly, I fully expected a physically dominate power game with a passing threat. It hadn't occurred to me, but if that's the case, FIRE Schotty NOW! It would take me all night to enumerate all the reasons

The Rams spent their free agent dollars on Cook and Long. They traded up to get Austin in the draft. These were the Rams top priority offseason moves, and all were to enhance the passing game.

You quoted a comment I made about the Rams mishandling injured players, with a response about the Rams not building for an aerial attack? Not sure I get the connection.
