What ever became of the checkdown?

In Linehan's first year, we used the checkdown to the running back as a major weapon in our offensive arsenal. Has anybody noticed that we really throw a checkdown to backs or tight ends anymore?

I am not talking screen passes or smoke routes, but I remember so many times seeing Jackson sitting wide open about 3 yards deep in the middle of the field. We would hit a few of those, get the linebackers and safeties up, then we could strike with intermediate routes in the middle of the field ...

So, tell me, is it just me, or has this options just dissapeared from the playbook?

Good question. I think it part the answer is that the play doesnt work nearly as well with players other than jackson and jackson has been hurt. Second, i think we have been keeping the back in to block more to try and protect. Third, i think we miss mcmichael, who is a perfect checkdown option. There is no evidence that we have another tight end that can catch.

We've struggled so much on pass protection, but I just wonder if, one time, we audible into a running back screen in the middle of the field when the QB is anticipating a blitz, what would happen? Looks like huge yardage to me ...

Very true, that. I wonder what our scouts ever saw in Klopfenstein....

To play Devil's Advocate, is it that we don't run those plays any longer or is it that a certain QB is incapable of executing them?

Yes, Bulger is incapable of performing a checkdown to the RB. Because, you know, Jackson only had 90 receptions back in 2006 ...

This really is becoming tiresome ...

Question for you RamsInfiniti: just what is a "smoke" route? I could think of some jokes to go with that, but it's too early for that right now.

Smoke route, or hitch route ...

Basically a lateral to the wide receiver. You see them to Avery and Stanley on a frequent basis .....

THe Smoke route was perfected by Cheech and Chong. When the ball is in the air, Cheech has been known to yell, its "Up in Smoke"

We called the 10 yard button hook a hitch. The play you are talking about we called a "Bob Hayes" but that's because we're old and the old guys are ancient.
