What are the odds that chillar returns?

I get the sense that chillar is gone for sure. Am i overeacting to the odds?

Some people i really respect on this board have stated that he is really a good but not great two down linebacker who is likely to get a very large payday due to the dearth of talent available on the open market. If he is among the best linebackers available, teams will pay up for him because they have the cap money to spend.

What does everyone think, will we pay up for him and should we pay up for him. those are two different questions.

As everyone knows, you can't keep everyone you would like to because of the cap, so forced choices are inevitable at some point. The trick is to try and make the right choices. I have been a Chillar supporter as Brandon has been solid if unspectacular. That said, if he gets offered huge bucks, I would rather spend our money on Atogwe and Steven Jackson. I don't see this as another "London Fletcher" episode .. It will all boil down to how much other teams are willing to pay him.

I agree. and I like Chillar.

But Jackson and Atogwe are pretty much proven at this point, and if the league does an "Archuleta" with Chillar - so be it. Between Culberson, McGarigle and/or Draft and FA/The Draft, we shouldn't be much worse off.

Chillar looked appreciably better this year than last. D-LINE improvement, anyone?

Re: What are the odds that chillar returns?

Earlier in the season, I would have been less optimistic about filling the position with value. I felt that either we would have to overpay Chillar or take a step back in quality. However, there are more SAMs on the market than I earlier thought. Pace, Mitchell, Torbor, Dansby (though he's been tagged) are all solid SAMs who are most/all a tad better than Chillar. With the exception of Dansby, all of them could be vying for big contracts on the open market. That's a lot of quality 4-3 SAMs fighting for fewer and fewer positions. Therefore, Chillar's price tag could come down, OR one of the others could be had for less than money than originally expected. Lot of talented 4-3 SAMs out there.....not a good year to be testing the market.

Of course, between Culberson and McGariagle, Chillar's spot may get filled from within. And there's always the versatile Chris Draft to step in as well.

Speaking of the draft.......there's a couple of good day 1 SAMs to look at like UM's Shawn Crable and UNLV's Beau Bell. Both of them would fill nicely. And some decent day 2 projections like Nevada's Ezra Butler, Purdue's Stanford Kegler, or Vandy's Curtis Gatewood.

I like Chillar, but if the price ain't right, I'm not gonna lose any sleep.

We have a few Linebackers who could be just as good as him. I'm sorry, I don't think Chillar is the answer. He's definately not worth the money when we have 3 LB's waiting.

I think Chillar did improve this year but I don't think he's worth the money.

Re: What are the odds that chillar returns?

We have bigger problems to solve for next year and beyond. If Chillar is willing to accept a reasonable salary for his talent level fine, otherwise let him walk. The market for SAM's sounds pretty crowded, so his asking price may have to come down. We MUST sign Jackson and Atogwe, Chillar is a lower priority. I am very interested to see the development of Culberson. I'm not even sure Haslett is a huge fan of Chillar and that may be the tipping point.

I was interested in Shawn Crable out of UM, but he's likely to go in round 2-3 where that is too high for us based on other pressing needs on our OL and DL. His performance at the Senior Bowl was uninspired from what I read.

No, because the Rams never invest in keeping young talent on the defense. They waste their money on stiffs like Bennett.

I think Chillar is gone. Not neccessarily because some team overpays a lot, I just don't think the defensive staff is very impressed with him and they probably believe that our other guys Culberson-Draft-McGarigle can easily replace him at a lower price. As HUbison said, if he gets too expensive and we have to go with our other guys instead I'm not losing any sleep over it either.

If I had to put percentages on it I would say 70-80% chance he's gone.

Re: What are the odds that chillar returns?

As much as I like Chillar, i get the feeling the team is high on Culberson and McGarigle. The former just signed an extension, and McGarigle had one great game in the preseason after injury which warranted a spot on the roster.

I would like to see Chillar remain in the horns, but bottom line, if his asking price is too high, and if we can fill the position from within and we are convinced that one of the aforementioned players will step up and do just as good a job, then i can see how he could be let go.

    Agreed, it's that simple.

hey , didn't CULBERSON fill in for a game and make 12 or 13 tackles or something like that . i think the rams already have that position filled they just are not going to say anything yet.and with DEVANEY there now , maybe they might think that it's getting very boring to bring along a player until he is doing really well , and then let him walk.

Depends on what Devanney thinks of Chillar, but this team just doesn't keep defensive players when they hit their prime. It will be interesting to see what happens with Atogwe as well.

to me I think chillar is on his way out...I bet he ends up with the Pats... I think the Rams are going to explore the FA market and see whats out there..
