what is the typical recovery period for a torn acl?

The context of the question is for nfl qb's, not for any other profession. Is there any reason to believe that sammy wont be 100% come next year? Will he be ready to practice at OTA'S? Any shot at all that he will be back later this year?

I would expect 9-12 months minimum. Seriously doubt he even starts game one next season, let alone has a training camp.

Just looked back at some previous ACL tears to quarterbacks and it seems 8-10 months was the span for most of them.

I tore mine 21 years ago. Whatever the physical recovery time is now (8-10 months sounds about right), the mental recovery time varies. Some trust the repair right away, others are reflexively cautious.

RG3 hurt his in the last game of the season and came back week one (granted he has been slow to get back into form). AP also hurt his late in the season and it didn't exactly slow him down. I have no real idea of the extent of their injuries compared to Sam's but since it's earlier in the year I think he'll be back for the regular season if not the preseason next year.

Needless to say the Rams have some decisions to make. I say they bring Vince Young in. He gives us the best chance to make the post season. definetely throws a wrench in Seatle's game plan

Fisher would rather sign Kerry Collins. But then again, it wouldn't surprise me if did.

Re: what is the typical recovery period for a torn acl?

I tore mine in a game of American football in 1998. I was playing receiver and tore it on my cut move running a deep post. It was during trials for the Scottish Claymores (NFL Europe)

Had reconstructive surgery and believed the hype that you could return within 6 months. Bad move. I partially tore it again by returning too early AND whilst playing in a 'Donjoy' all singing all dancing knee brace.

In my experience to be FULLY healed you need a full TWELVE months of rehab and strengthening.

As one who has been through this before.....I feel Sams pain......I really do.

    ....bugger.

Anybody know how long it took for Trent Green to heal? Was it the same type of damage?

Re: what is the typical recovery period for a torn acl?

I coached a high school baseball player who tore his ACL playing QB for us in October and was playing baseball in Mid-March. He was a shortstop-pitcher who completed the season healthy and without incident. What used to take nearly a full year of recovery time now takes half that much.

Of course we're talking about professional football here, but saying Bradford wouldn't be able to play next year is a bit of a stretch. Provided the surgery and rehab goes well, he could conceivably be ready for training camp. But needless to say, the Rams need to now draft a QB or make a trade as a contingency plan.

Unlike RGIII, no one is looking for a read-option Sam to come back. His recuperation from shoulder injury was nothing short of amazing, being drafted #1 after missing most of his senior season and impressing in his Pro day exhibition. His recup from this will be as impressive as any other ever seen...and I include Adrian Peterson's. NOW GET SOME PLAYERS AROUND HIM!

Re: what is the typical recovery period for a torn acl?

6 months.....because April is when we fix our QB problems and pick our next future QB. Sam will be back for sure but this time he'll have someone waiting for a chance to steal the spotlight and battle for the starting position. I want Sam to succeed badly but for the last couple of years he's known that the position is his. Maybe if we can get someone in here that can battle for the starting position he'll show more consistency and push his game to another level. If Sam comes back strong next year at least we'll know we have some type of security if he goes down again. We're stuck with Clemens now and i don't say that with a lot of confidence. Get well Sam.

Unless Kroenke sold the team to Bud Adams last night, I highly doubt Fisher will be bringing in the man that was forced on him and led to his firing.
