Where would we be without Martz?

I saw an interesting question posted over at the PD board (I was slumming.....and yes I showered before returning here), and thought I would ask a similar question for everyone here.......

If Martz were never a coach for the Rams.....
    1. What would this team look like now?
    2. What would the '99-'05 era have turned out to be?

    Impossible to know for certain.

Speculating, I would say the Rams would not have had the same success.

In my opinion, John Shaw is an idiot!!

Look at the head coaching candidates, with the overall best proven success as a head coach, in mind.

Martz is at the top of the list.

Well I do know this, The Rams would have been the first team ever to lose 100 games in a decade! But 99' pulled them out of that stat and let the Bengals have it!!
I stopped going to the dentist.......I got tired of the cavity searches!

Re: Where would we be without Martz?

If the Rams hadn't signed Martz...well, they wouldn't have gone after Trent Green. I'm assuming they would have still picked up Holt and Faulk, and from the way things played out in 1998, they were going to get rid of Banks. Would Warner have been given a shot? Would Furrer been Warner's competition for 2nd string? All in all, I think the Rams were playoff caliber after 1998 once Banks was gone. The first portion of 1998 the offense and defense were both playing well and were really held back by qb play.

Now, I've heard that Vermeil wanted to bring in Hostettler when Green went down, but I don't know if that would have equated to pursuing him if the whole Martz/Green thing didn't take place.

So, I'm pretty sure the GSOT season of 1999 wouldn't have happened but, if the majority of the team stayed healthy like it did the Rams would have been successful. Had they improved on the 4-12 of 1998, then Vermeil possibly doesn't retire. If Vermeil doesn't retire then whoever's playing qb stay's healthy and the musical chairs the Rams have had since 1999 would have been more solidified.

All of this is just wild speculation and I think I know what you're leading up to with this thread. However, as enjoyable as the GSOT was, like the run & shoot Oilers, was bound to end once the league caught on. Granted, Martz's offesne changed the way defenses play and for three years, defenses couldn't match up, but without the novelty advantage Martz's teams have been average (21-27 the last three years).

You know, this reminds me of that episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation where Picard has the ability to go back to his youth and make different choices.

Live long and prosper and GO RAMS!

Mok, sincerely, I'm not leading anywhere with this thread. I'm simply curious how others believe the '99-'05 era would have played out without Martz.

Playing these little what-if games can by kind of eye-opening as to how people may view reality vs. perception of those seasons.

Just trying to gain a little perspective.

Without Mike Martz, there is no GSOT and almost certainly no Super Bowl title. Love him or hate him, every Ram fan owes a debt of gratitude for the excitement, respect and success Mad Mike gave us.

Maybe this has to go on another thread, but 8mill for a freaking DC that got swept by the giants who scored 35 points and run for over 200 yds!!??!?!! you gotta be kidding.
They did win some important games, but they had an easy schedule the last part of the season.
8mill for greg williams!?!?!? thank you but no thanks

Personally I truly believe we would have won more without Mike. I really do believe this in my heart so there's NO use in trying to convince me other wise!
IMPO he seen the field so much better upstairs and had so much LESS responsibility when he was JUST a OC. Mike i truly believe got a little cocky with the league and he has paid for it! Instead of getting help at area's needed on the team he always thought he could miraculously transform players that he thought could play other position's instead of keeping his eye on the TEAM as a whole! He neglected the Oline and Defense up until the last year IMPO! He wasted timeouts foolishly and basically called the other NFL teams out! They and the NFL caught up with him! It was Mike's way or the highway which isn't bad sometimes to have a swift foot! But, come on! With the talent that the RAMS have had any good coach WOULD have won a few more Super bowls IMPO! Karma!......there's something to it! What comes around goes around!

So, it sounds like you would have him be the OC through that whole era, am I correct? Unfortunately, the Rams had already received requests to interview him for other HC jobs before the end of '99, so the problem is, he would have been gone, most likely, after the '99 season anyway.

So, as with the original question, what if he had never been here at all?
