Who should be the starting strong side linebacker for the St. Louis Rams in 2007?

Many of us want the Rams to look at an upgrade at linebacker this offseason, but where will that upgrade play? Where will he come from? And what happens to our current personnel?

Let's hear it Clan. Who starts on the strong side in 2007?

i voted for spoon. i think he is an incredible athlete and would be more of an asset to the defense if he is able to work outside the box and in space. he could really help put pressure on the passer blitzing from the outside. now i'm not much of a draft expert or anything, but i would like to see us go after patrick willis to man the middle.

I think (not sure who the free-agents are) but if we can get a good FA, I'd say we could wrap up that position perhaps with an older vet, and draft a good player, let the new guy learn? Pretty much same thing with Jackson, except he had a few years experience, but look how much Davis helped him out?

Spoon cuz I want Patrick Willis in the draft

Pisa at WLB, Willis at MLB and Spoon at SLB that would be an impressive linebacker corp. Some say Spoon isn't a true SAM but the truth remains we just signed Pisa to an extension. Spoon is better suited at SAM than at MLB and besides I can't think of any true SLB's available in the draft or free agency that bring more to the table than Spoon does.

I think drafting P Willis would be a mistake. He is the about the same size as Spoon so why would he be better? I think spoon would be fine if we just sit that fat heartless NT of ours and ether draft or sign a real player for NT that would keep O-line off of Spoon and free him to make plays. Spoon has played WLB and MLB in his the NFL and know you wan't him to play SLB??? If we can draft a SLB in the draft that would be the best choice.

This is how I see the LB core looking next year

    SLB: Tinaisamoa

    MLB: Draft Pick/Free Agent

    WLB: Spoon

Put spoon in his natural spot and Psa in the spot he played as a rookie and bring in a new player with the size to be in the middle.

Adalius Thomas would be a GREAT addition to the team! I am a fan of him since he's apart of (in my opinion) the best D in football at the moment. He'd be great to obtain..

Yes I would love that move and with a FA at NT we could turn this thing around!

Okay, so those of you who say Briggs or Thomas, can you answer me this? The Rams signed Will Witherspoon to a six-year $33 million deal last spring. We just resigned Pisa to a five-year extension worth about $25 million.

How are we going to sign Briggs or Thomas to ANOTHER huge contract when we already have nearly $60 million invested over multiple years in two starting linebackers? From a financial standpoint, I just don't see how it makes sense to put nearly if not more than $100 million into three players on D, all playing LB.

True, but aren't we one of the teams that have the most money right now? I know thats a stretch for any kind of excuse to get out of your argument but it seems valid enough to happen. I don't know what the coaches have in mind, but we do know one thing, they're happy with the safety position, I think the CB position is set for now, and it leaves us to focus on the d line and the linebacker(s) position. And I don't know how excited you're with the DT Free agents, but the LB free agents are much more exciting than the DT ones that I know of at the moment; seems like we'd get much better quality out of a big free-agent LB signing than DT at this point. (That I know of...if I'm wrong please enlighten me!)

This isn't about the 2007 cap though. This is about total money from an organization toward one group of players, and I just think it's a stretch to think the organization is going to throw $100 million or so at three players who are all linebackers. That's a LOT of money being spent on one part of the team. We have 22 starters, and I'm just not sure it's wise to spend $100 million on three of them.

As for spending it on other positions, defensive ends Justin Smith and Charles Grant won't command huge dollars IMO but would definitely be a better use of that money. DT Terdell Sands could be part of a strong rotation but the Raiders are trying to resign him. And personally, I think that if we're going to sign someone to a $30-40 million contract this offseason, I'd rather it be a player like Steinbach to help a relatively inexperienced (and generally inexpensive) offensive line in need of another talented veteran presence.
