Who will be the Rams' "Mr. Big Play" for 2013?

The Rams have made an effort to add "playmakers" to the roster. So... who will lead the Rams in "big plays" in 2013?

Let's start by defining the term. For simplicity, I'm going to make one player ineligible: the QB. From a statistical standpoint, it really doesn't work if you include the QB in the mix.

So, here's my definition of the term: the following will qualify as "big plays":

    Touchdown scored (by any means)
Go-ahead TD in final 2 minutes.
Rush of 20 or more yards.
Reception of 25 or more yards.
Punt Return of 20 or more yards.
Kickoff return of 40 or more yards.
QB sack, tackle for loss, or safety.
Turnover (interception, forced fumble or fumble recovery).
FG of 50 or more yards.
    Game winning FG.

Each category will be assigned a numerical value of 1. Of course, a player can have more than one point in a play (i.e. a 35 yard TD reception to take the lead in the final 2 minutes would yield 3 points).

So... who will be the Rams' "Mr. Big Play" in 2013?

I was tempted to go with Austin but, in the end, I went with Quinn. I could see him having 14+ sacks, 2 or more forced fumbles, and a few TFL. That would make him tough to beat at Mr. Big Play.

I'm thinking Cook and Givens are going to be the front runners for this poll. I'm hoping it's Richardson or Austin that lead us as Mr Big Play of 2013. If either one of them are we are in for a great season.

My vote is going to go to.......... wait......wait.........wait

    TAVON AUSTIN!!!!!

Maybe it's wishful thinking, but Austin can do so many things in so many different ways, I see him making a lot of big plays. His preseason punt returns were just a sample of what he can do in space, and are hopefully a preview of what's to come.

Re: Who will be the Rams' "Mr. Big Play" for 2013?

It came down to four players for me: Givens, Austin, Quinn and Long. Ogletree was a close #5. At the end of the day it comes down to who has the most opportunity to accomplish these "big" plays?

Quinn and Long are in the same boat, with Quinn being a bit faster, but Long being the better all around player. He could beat Quinn out on the tackles for loss with both of them getting similar sack numbers in the 10-16 range.

On offense, Givens is likely to get a number of long throws, but in doing so is going to see more safety coverage on top of him this year. In the meantime, Mr. Austin is going to handoffs, passes, punts and perhaps kickoffs, meaning that he has a very good chance every game to break a play for a big gain and get a point, even if Givens is scoring his 50 yard TD's.

So, do I foresee Austin getting 20 points, with maybe 6 total TD's, 4 rushes, 6 receptions and 4 returns? Yeah, I can easilysee that and going above what Long might do, getting somewhere in the 20-25 range.
    I believe!

Man that is a great question. The best part about is we now have so many players to choose from!

I went with Chris Givens. I think with Cook, Austin and Kendricks working the seam and the underneath routes. Givens will be one on one and will beat a lot of DBs.

That said I think Michael Brockers will be the best player on the team in 2013.

Re: Who will be the Rams' "Mr. Big Play" for 2013?

I was tempted to go with an offensive player as that usually defines Big Play. But we have an assortment this season and I'm not sure any one will be that "go to" player for whom you're asking. So looking at the defense your selection of Quinn is good. However, depending on sub packages, he may not always be on the field. My next thought was Janoris Jenkins because I'm sensing he will have a big breakout year given his enormous talent. Then I considered that QB's & DC's will work around him if he has the year I'm forecasting. So that pointed me to Alec Ogletree because I think offenses will try to test him as he's a rookie and he's begun to show why he was so coveted by Snead and Fisher. The game against Denver was a coming out for him and as his confidence builds he will become that OLB for which he's projected. As much as I quivered when Fisher called him "our Patrick Willis", I don't think Jeff makes those statements lightly, so there's a real belief in his talent and I think he will deliver some real big plays for us this year, particularly when we are playing with a lead which I expect we will be a lot this year.

    Go Rams!

I hope it is Austin but I chose Cookie, I just think he will be able to get free cause Austin and Givens will get the attention. And he is a huge red zone target for Sam, and more consistent in my view than Pettis down in the Red Zone. I liked what you all said and hope these various guys can come through cause the more we have success on both sides of the ball and get the big plays the more games I think we win!

I especially like this poll since we have not had this much potential for Big Play talent in years. I'm not going to vote to single anyone out. After years of losing and being beat down I just want to see a winning season from a TEAM concept.

Since there seems to be some interest in this stat, I'm going to go ahead and track it week-by-week.

Should be interesting to see how it plays out.

I was tempted to go with Austin, but I just think there is going to be a learning curve for our exciting rookie. Had to go with Cook slicing through the middle...

What? No Jenkins? He's been nuzzling up to these speedsters all summer and has HIS rook year behind him. Now it's all numbers baby. Bring it.
