Why did it take two years to Bench Chavous ? ?

Why did it take two years to Bench Chavous?

It was obvious that he had major coverage issues - and it was obvious to the Casual observer a long time ago.

You can't run a football team like this, and it shows in our record over the past two years.

I don't presume to know why it's taken this long to bench him, but my gut says he wasn't benched because he's the smartest guy in the Rams secondary. he's also a leader in and out of the locker room. his play ability was getting shoddy, sure (and sloooow), but maybe the coaches felt he was elevating the play of the guys around him. dunno.

I would say that this falls under the "lack of a better option" subheading, meaning the reason he's starting is predominantly because the coaching staff didn't believe there was anybody better on the roster, despite his poor play over the last two seasons. Add to that the fact that he does indeed bring valuable veteran leadership to the team and you have the makings of starter, simply because there was nobody better to put out there.

Chavous' first season in Horns was not, as I recall, all that bad, so any calls to bench him after that season were not justified. Last season, I think we had so many other areas of need that Strong Safety got neglected in amidst needs along the D-Line, O-Line and at WR.

A lot of young guys needing a veteran presence on the field would be my guess. Hill, Bartell, Wade, O.J. It may have taken a year before Haslett was ready and the young ones had enough experience to move Johnson into his spot.

I'm trying to work up a joke that combines the slow benching with a comment on Corey's speed on the field. So far its not working.

Re: Why did it take two years to Bench Chavous ? ?

Can only agree with that sentiment, I have no idea how the coaching staff was apparently in some dazed and confused state where they were unable to see how bad he was playing for years. I've been calling for us to draft a safety in the top-3 rounds of the draft for a couple of years now, but we haven't even picked one in the lower rounds never mind one who could be a potential starter. And now the problem is much worse because we didn't prepare for the future, we've now found out Chavous is no good (finally!) but we now have to wait until next year's draft, then maybe wait a year or two for the guy we pick to hopefully develop and only then have a good SS to play. That's a lot of time with no solution in place. And it was definitely avoidable and it didn't take a genius to see either. But I guess planning ahead isn't really a strong suit of our FO.

Chavous is slow. He is weak in run support, not a great sure tackler for a SS or a big hitter, takes bad angles. Gets lost in coverage, for such a veteran 'leader' I've even noticed him being out of position too quite a bit (or at least that's how it has looked, not knowing the exact playcalls). I really don't see the upside anywhere. What is his strength, what does he do well? To me he's pretty bad across the board.

Re: Why did it take two years to Bench Chavous ? ?

The reason it took two years to bench Chavous is that pro football is a business. The Rams invested $$$$$$ in him so they played him even though he wasn't and isn't the best player at ss.

Exhibit A: I played minor league baseball but was signed for a "cup of coffee". Though I was hitting over .300, I was benched so that a player who was signed for lots of money could be played and who was sent down from a higher level to "get his stroke". He never panned out but I ended up being released. It's all about the investment a team makes in a player that determines his playing time, IMO.

It's about time we change up the SS position. I am not doubting that Chavous may be a smart player, but he is past his playing years. Time to move on and find a replacement.

Re: Why did it take two years to Bench Chavous ? ?

How about someone that can lead by example on the field? What does it say to the younger guys when the person they're supposed to be looking up to is constantly being burned in coverage or missing tackles in the backfield? I'd say that's pretty deflating and is more of a detriment then losing his type of leadership on the field. If he's a "Rah Rah" type of leader, then he can still do that in the locker room and from the bench.

    Ummmmm... how about:

hey everybody, why'd it take Coach Haslett until week 14 to take Corey Chavous off the field?
    ...
    ...
    ...
... because he had to wait for Chavous to "run" back to the sideline!

    boo ya

    or

How many Corey Chavous' does it take to cover a WR?
    ...
    ...
    ...
... dunno, rams don't have enough draft picks to find out!

    or

What test did Linehan use to find out if a TE wasn't fast enough to stay on the team?
    ....
    ...
... he had them race Corey Chavous.
